I believe this is the first time I have ever been picture-captioned as a #folklorist, so I'll take that as a win, even if the article then doesn't say anything more about it.

It was a real privilege to be part of the New #Carnival Company's 2026 launch last week.

I have a question on fairy lore and changelings for a folklorist. Anybody?

niche post but I've been going in yet another Ruth Rubin deep dive lately preparing for a song teaching thing this winter--she was a Canadian-American #Yiddish song collector and #folklorist --and I came across this 1978 musical evening recording with her in #Montreal c/o the Jewish Public Library's old cassette collection digitized at the Yiddish Book Center. Her lecturing mostly in Yiddish about folksongs & after 30min or so, singing.

Lady Augusta Gregory was a keen #folklorist She collected an anecdote saying "Aristotle of the books was very wise, but the bees got the best of him in the end!"🐝 She later wrote a play 'Aristotle's Bellows' based on Irish folklore & mythology #FolkyFriday #Writers #Spéirghorm #Art #JBYeats

So, originally "based" meant you smoked ("freebased" smokable) crack, then it meant you were weird like someone who smoked crack, then it meant you weren't afraid to be called weird because you were unapologetic and you had that swagger, then it meant you were unapologetic about being alt-right, and then it meant you're an asshole who's drunk that alt-ride koolaid. What a ride this little slang has been on. #linguistodons #folklorist #slang #histodons

The HIGHLIGHT of my #Xmas haul is @SimonRoyHughes 's excellent Annotated Edition of the complete Norwegian #Folktale collection from the legendary Asbjørnsen & Moe.

The most complete English translation of these works ever made, easily. Absolutely gold mine of interesting tales for #writers looking for ideas and contextual info for amateur #folklorist

Or, you know, just reading them to folks like your kids--as they are meant to live.

Nearly Knowledgeable

In Shropshire, it was possible to see the man you would marry on All Saint's Eve. Standing in front of a mirror, women brushed their hair with one hand and ate an apple with the other. If you were lucky, you would see your love. If you were unlucky, you would see a coffin, which foretold your death. You can read about some more of Shropshire's All Saints Eve folklore below-
