Eye-tracking used to mean a lab, a headset, and a budget most teams don’t have. Foveacast predicts where users will look from a screenshot, entirely in your browser, nothing uploaded. Good enough for early design decisions and sanity-checking CTAs before you ship.

Having to tell people in our software industry about known and well-established cognitive biases still feels a little “how didn’t you know that?” but then of course I’m falling victim to the false consensus bias there 😉

For example, company demonstrates a new product at a trade show and they tell us “everyone loved it!” thinking that translates to guaranteed sales and a good UX. I don’t want to be the buzzkill but no, a demo in public is not solid research.

The “you need 30 participants” rule gets repeated like it’s carved in stone, but it was never a universal law. MeasuringU breaks down when sample size actually matters and when the rule is overkill for your study type. If you’re making research design decisions by gut feel, this is the piece to read.

Include people with cognitive disabilities in user research, not just accessibility research.

They can surface general usability issues related to content, buttons and links, icons or visual elements, and media while also helping you understand how your product functions in terms of cognitive load.

Anthropic moved us to the bigger tier and pricing rocketed. The day before, I’d highlighted the risk to a director, but sadly not quick enough. “The billing is a concern” I was told. They are in negotiations - good luck! I suspect many are unhappy with Anthropic et al.

Anyhoo. We have to run an agentic trial. Very much interested in your case studies about agentic approaches and integrating any research data, if you have any success or horror stories!

Nine out of ten problems flagged by AI-only audits needed to be corrected or dismissed entirely. Useful data next time someone asks why you can’t just run automated tooling and call it a review. The gap between what machines flag and what actually hurts users is still wide.
