This is the social media account of the ERC Synergy Grant "The Cultures of the Cryosphere. Infrastructures, Politics, and Futures of Artificial Cooling" (2024-2030).
The research project is a collaboration between Suzana Alpsancar (Paderborn University), Alexander Friedrich (TU Darmstadt | @alexanderfriedrich), Stefan Höhne (KWI Essen | @StefanHoehne), and Bronwyn Parry (ANU Canberra | @ANUResearch).
The project started in September 2024. More posts will follow soon... #cryocultures

Our 2nd CryoLecture is now online:

Nicola Twilley: Frostbite - How Refrigeration Changed Our Food, Our Planet, and Ourselves

In July 2025, in the pre-refrigeration architecture of a lagering cellar—an appropriate location, given that the world’s first commercial refrigerating machines were built to keep beer cold!—Nicola Twilley shared highlights from her exploration of the artificial cryosphere followed by a conversation with Alexander Friedrich (TU Darmstadt).

This week, the #Cryocultures team met in Darmstadt to research the infrastructures of freshness. After visiting the Perishable Center at Frankfurt Airport—a key hub for delivering fresh and time-sensitive goods across Europe—we spent three days studying the artificial cryosphere. A highlight was Nicola Twilley's lecture in an old ice cellar, where the "Frostbite" author shared fascinating insights into her research on artificial cold on which modern life so much depends.

🧊 #CryoLecture:

Today at 6:30 pm, Nicola Twilley will talk about her award-winning book “Frostbite. How Refrigeration Changed Our Food, Our Planet, and Ourselves” at the second #CryoLecture organized by the ERC-project @cryocultures.
