When pro sports teams move their #stadiums to the #suburbs, do the cities they leave behind suffer? Let’s consider this year’s Super Bowl festivities. The #NFL and others are throwing lavish parties leading up to this game. Where are the parties held? In Santa Clara, where the game is played? Actually, most are 40 miles away … in S.F. https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/super-bowl-san-francisco-21322662.php
Outdoor views from around the house. Looks like we’ve gotten two inches so far. And it appears that people actually paid attention to the state of emergency that was declared yesterday afternoon, because—in stark contrast to normal life—nobody is parked on our street. #SouthJersey #NJ #Philly #Suburbs #Snow
One of the things to know about cities today is that there is plenty of land for new developments. It’s land that’s either vacant or seriously underutilized. A development firm looking to build a mixed-use, transit-oriented community in suburban Atlanta had little trouble finding its site. It was a dying strip shopping center, which #suburbs have in abundance. https://www.ajc.com/business/2026/01/struggling-retail-center-near-perimeter-mall-poised-for-mixed-use-makeover/ #CRE

The shame of the suburbs: In #suburbs near Atlanta, families on the verge of #homelessness live in extended-stay motels where they pay rents that, in some cases, amount to 77% of what they earn. How can they pay such ruinous rents? By turning to second jobs including food delivery. It gets worse: This sometimes involves … renting cars. https://www.ajc.com/news/2026/01/dekalb-study-families-living-in-hotels-spend-77-of-income-on-rent/

Dawn, Sandy Hook, Connecticut, Martin Lewis

really like the sky and the light in this one. I watch a lot of films and the first thing I thought about when I saw this was something like, "those fellas look like they're up to something", some kind of mysterious plot in the sleepy village. I like that there's one window with light in it, the colors of the row of houses. The scraggly tree and grass seem winter-y.

"Big Car is a confederation of industries such as gasoline, auto manufacturing, car insurance, lobbyists, asphalt producers, tire producers, and others, who work together to push a lifestyle that has made us all dependent on their products...The “American Dream” had become the world’s nightmare."
