Thanks for the reply! Onboarding servers and users is definitely the key to building network effects. However, I have a few lingering questions regarding usability and abuse prevention that I’d love to hear your thoughts on:

  • Tag Limits vs. Quality: If someone shares high-quality, long-form content with 20 relevant technical tags, it might be flagged as spam by automated systems, yet it remains valuable to the community. How does tags.pub plan to distinguish between 'high-density knowledge sharing' and 'pure spam'?
  • Rate Limiting: Will there be rate limits for individual users interacting with the boost bots? For context, in the Chinese Fediverse community, we use board[@]ovo.st(7700 followers) as a public notice board, which implements a limit of 10 mentions per 24 hours per user to prevent flooding.
  • Branding & Identification: Currently, these bots often appear with the default Mastodon "elephant" avatar. As the project scales, are there plans for unified branding? Perhaps a tags.pub logo or procedurally generated avatars (similar to Misskey) to make them more recognizable in notification feeds.
  • Granular Control: If I follow _followback but want to exclude a specific tagged post from being boosted, will there be an opt-out mechanism like a #nobot or similar exclusion tag?I’m excited to see the convenience tags.pub brings to the Fediverse and how it navigates these governance challenges!"

    It may be necessary to actively block bots that become followers or scrape your posts, if you don't want to litter your bio with a string of their intrusive, "mandatory" opt-out #No… hashtags.

    An hour ago, I had changed #NoBot to #NoBots, to fend off tags.pub, a brazen scraper bot of the pompous @swf. As they declared in a haughty manner, you need to opt out by adding the plural form.

    An hour later, the rotten @HolosDiscover bot followed me – because it demands the singular form, #NoBot, for an "opt-out".

    Fuck all nonconsentual stalker bots. For their creators, I wish they catch a long-lasting infection with Pthirus pubis, and may their arms be way too short to allow for scratching.

    New to this server but not new to Mastodon or the Fediverse at large.

    I'm a cis-male, gay-asexual public library worker from the middle of England.

    I'm into gaming, linguistics, learning Welsh (approximately B1/B2 level), low-level tinkering with techy things (recently MeshCore), plants and catching up on the news. I sometimes lose an hour or two to falling down a Wikipedia rabbit-hole.

    I use Linux – not Arch, btw – and GrapheneOS with free & open-source software (FOSS).

    I am chief lap-giver to two small furry beings-in-charge. 🐱 🐈

    I have another account (for now) over at @james which may or may not vanish at some stage. I moved here because this instance doesn't seem to run on Cloudflare infrastructure.

    Anyway. Come and say hello or recommend some accounts you think I might like. :)

    #HolosDiscover is up to shenanigans again. Rather than making their scraper / indexer truly opt-in, they're again using @[email protected] to follow accounts that don't have search engine indexing turned off and don't have #NoBot and #NoIndex in their profiles.

    I recommend blocking @[email protected] at minimum.

    As a sidebar, I would support the existence of an actual opt-in index for reasons I have discussed previously. This is not that.

    Hello #HypeBot operator, there has been a recent case sensitivity patch in tante's fork to respect #NoBot in user profiles in addition to #nobot.

    Your instance boosted the above post, indicating it does not have this behavior. For the sake of fedi users like myself who use the screen reader-friendly capitalization, please update your instance or pull the patch into your copy at your earliest convenience.
