Algorithmic not artificially intelligent, but even the automation might make you feel inadequate. In any case, take a moment to ponder a future with this idea is applied to any labor you might do...

Slow-mo video: Robot solves Rubik's Cube in the blink of an eye, literally

A Mitsubishi Electric robot that normally positions wires in motors for appliances like air conditioners has solved the Rubik’s Cube puzzle at a blistering speed, setting a new Guinness World Record in the process.

File this one under the #comingLaborApocalypse. Really, I can't think of a job that is safe, but these are soon toast. Consider supporting basic income #ubi before it's too late.

Creepy video shows a ‘glimpse into the future’ as silent AI robots ‘trained in minutes’ complete tasks in office

OpenAI-backed company 1X released a creepy, silent video of its AI EVE robots completing everyday work tasks with a fixed smile.

There is a whole lot of #business #AI #IT and #chatgpt idiocy to unpack in this article, not the least is the self satirizing tone of the clueless author, despite the hopeful clickbait headline. If this is what companies are really thinking, it's the #cominglaborapocalypse around the corner. Either that or there will be no people who know how the computers or software works.

Bank CIO: We don't need AI whizzes, we need critical thinkers to challenge AI

Arguments for using AI tools beyond summary and organization for students and even teachers is spurious and fallacious in proportion how well the putative student is able to detect and reject corrupted or fabulated facts. The requirement to learn facts presented by AI might be more onerous than using traditional methods that rely on texts and articles traditionally used. The idea that a student, or a teacher, might proofread and factually revise a paper or thesis generated by an AI rather then generating it from their own mind completely negates the goals of education and guarantees a generation that can't think or create, relying on editing whatever is trending.

@clarablackink

"An interesting problem of labor is that humans aren't truly replaceable except in a system that has turned labor activities into essentially mechanical work..."

I'll distill the Coming Labor Apocalypse metaphor to its absolute essentials:

  • People do labor in exchange for food.

As hunter gathers, that meant hunting and gathering to eat. Let's ignore people gaming the system, parasites, cheaters, etc., for a moment. In modern terms, we "work" as an end to a means of "eating." Automation and misapplied AI disrupts this in the name of efficiency by interrupting the means for people to do labor that will allow them in the end to eat.

Of course, that means those elements of society that benefit in selfish ways from efficiency, let's call them people who game the system, parasites, and cheaters, end up with nobody able to eat because people no longer can provide labor in exchange for food.

In other words, if you have no money, you can't buy things. You can't eat. You become angry.

Efficiencies should provide more for everyone, but the short-sighted and selfish miss this.

Eliminating labor, without fixing the system (providing basic income, for example), leads to pitchforks and torches, thus the #ComingLaborApocalypse.

Shock video shows Atlas robot training for automotive work

It's a shock video because Atlas is unboxing and racking shocks – sorry about that. But it's also a shock because Atlas has always been a humanoid robotics research platform, not a commercial product – and this new video has us wondering.

File in the #robots are out to get ya or #cominglaborapocalypse file... Well, I nearly got run over by this thing. Literally, I heard something that sounded like a icebox rattling and then I saw a thing to my left rolling up really quickly with lights at the bottom, and I had no idea what was there. I had no previous context to figure out what it was. I moved a little closer, and it did too, and it stopped just before my ankles. I wasn't startled enough to shriek but I will admit to being nonplussed. I swiftly crossed the street and turned around to make sure of what I've seen. This first encounter was definitely freaky.

If these things are not in our stories, we are going to look like last millennium #writers. #Prompt anyone?

@MnemosyneSinger Being #cynical here, but the correct answer seems to be that they'll replace your labor with increased #automation and synthesis your #creativity with #AI. That said, anything that slows the progression is good.

…they proposed that our background performers should be able to be scanned [for a single payment] ... [and] their likeness ... should be able [to be used] for the rest of eternity...

At some point all human labor will be replaced by automation.

At that point no humans will earn a living.

Who are they planning to sell to, then?

Huh...? You say they'll give it away from free. FOTFLOL.

#SF, #SFF, and #writers #writing telepathy in your stories, take heed! If AI usurping writing jobs and illustration jobs isn't worry enough, AI in real life may be powerful enough to read the electrical / magnetic activity of the brain to decipher thought, especially if trained for a specific person. The ethical and societal implications are immense. The story ideas that can come from this could be amazing. Real #science, folks.
