#PennedPossibilities 1055 — Does your MC consider themself to be a professional? Of what?

When it comes to tracking down magical artefacts and acquiring them Nathan certainly considers himself to be a professional.

He takes a different view of the activities which bring him and Vicky, often reluctantly, into contact with supernatural beings as he’s adverse to the idea of exposing himself to danger.

He’s not personally equipped with the magic needed to survive and has to rely on Vicky for protection.

#WritersCoffeeClub 28 Jun: Can a reader ever truly feel what a writer felt while writing?

No, it's two entirely different things.

As a writer I want my reader to enjoy the story I’m telling.

I’m committed to telling my tale but don’t necessarily enjoy the process.

My reader should be free to sit back and watch the story unfold before their eyes enjoying it as a diversion from day to day life and not worry about its origins.

#PennedPossibilities 1055 — Does your MC consider themself to be a professional? Of what?

Pressured, she'd say air delivery courier. She's good at it, finding the addressee (whether they have an address or on the run) and leaving before they can kill the messenger, sometimes evading bodyguards and occasionally the constabulary if the addressee is in protective custody. She's forced to work for the mob, so being their courier is not something she's proud of, though she is proud of how well she flies performing her task, never once caught by the constabulary.

In this story, she earns her Shadowplay Guild card, only obtainable after a professional photography sale. That she's proud of—but she's not convinced she's the professional all her friends and her agent claim her to be. To her, it's a hobby and what we might call a Zen practice. She does love staring at the pictures she's taken of people living the normal life denied her.

#WritersCoffeeClub 28/6: Can a reader ever truly feel what a writer felt while writing?
I doubt it. Not least because what a writer feels (like any artist, I guess) is a weird melding of the emotional aspects with the more rational craft side.
Anyway, it’s not what I feel that should engage the reader, it’s what the **characters** feel.

#WordWeavers 28/6: If you couldn’t die as long as you had more book ideas to write, how long are you living?
Hmmm, this is a bit close to the bone just now…
And I’m currently wrapping up two books for imminent publication and at the same time furiously cracking on with Bk 9 of The Shattered Moon, which will be the conclusion of the ‘main sequence’ at least.
It doesn’t leave a lot of headspace for other ideas, but when I can take a breath they’ll come.
