Since the beginning of this year, The Bartholomew Collective has been forming a relationship of mutual aid with Sara Abu Rida. Sara is a dear friend of ours from Gaza, doing everything she can to keep her loved ones alive. Her family includes her mother, nieces and nephews, extended family, and community. Since the escalation of the genocide, her family home has been destroyed by bombs, and her family has been displaced numerous times. Amongst rampant starvation, sickness, unending violence, and the complete destruction of Palestine's economy, Sara and her family have a constant need for funds.

Seen in September in a marsh on Vancouver Island: a male dragonfly grasping a female at the back of the head during mating.

Did you know that dragonflies first appeared during the early Jurassic, about 200 million years ago?

@CatherineBabault I knew 🤓
Thanks for pointing out, anyway 😉

I don't know the species of Pacific North West of America. This tandem reminds me of Sympetrum sanguineum (Ruddy Darter) here in Europe.

Sympetrum internum perhaps, the Cherry-Faced Meadowhawk?

@aeshna I don't think it's the Sympetrum internum. Could be the Sympetrum vicinum?

Since you seem to have an interest in dragonflies, here's a link to the UBC website with dozens of dragonflies found or observed in British Columbia: https://linnet.geog.ubc.ca/efauna/DB_Query/QueryForm.aspx?sort=Genus&Order=&Family=&Genus=&Species=&EnglishName=&SubmitForm=Search&rdType=All&InvStatus=Both&rdRedBlue=Both&f=1&oneword=dragonfly

@CatherineBabault Thank you. Surprising to see some „European“ species there, too. Some rare - S. danae, A. juncea - some common - L. quadrimaculata - in Germany. As for your proposal of S. vicinum, you may be right. No dark markings on the abdomen?
@aeshna Couldn't see the abdomen, sorry.

@CatherineBabault You took a Photo, the long end of the body is the abdomen. I can see there small black triangels on the sides of segments 8 and 9, I reckon.

(BTW isn‘t it in the middle of the night now in BC?)

@CatherineBabault
Great photo!
I caught a similar sight a few weeks back where it looks as if the female was depositing her eggs in the water. Unfortunately slightly out of focus.
@uk_csi Great photo! They are not the easiest subject to photograph: tiny and fast moving.
