Thanks for the responses! Turns out that what I actually had in the seed archive was not a lot of seeds but a crap ton of empty seed packets. 🙄 I left the seeds out for the birds, and the beans, peas and legumes went towards refreshing my ancient pie weights. I figured 12 year old beans that have been in and out of the oven countless times deserved a retirement in the compost. 🫘

first ever sighting of a Western Tanager, and it came as a mating pair. They danced in the understory, on a fallen mossy branch and on a broken branch hanging from the side of a tree. I watched them for about ten minutes before they flew into the canopy. Bridle Trail above MacCartney Creek Park and the Blair Rifle Range, North Vancouver. #birds #birding

It's funny watching these guys move. They just walk super quickly, head down, body not moving.

Godwit Gathering

These four marbled godwits (Limosa fedoa) were standing in the shallow surf along the Gulf of Mexico at Gulfport, Mississippi in the fall. They’re demonstrating two different heat‑saving strategies. Two have turned their heads backward, tucking their bills deep into the shelter of their feathers, giving them a resting, almost sleeping posture. The other two, more alert and facing out toward the open water, stand on one leg while the other is folded up beneath the warm insulation of their plumage.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

(3) hiked with the kids yesterday up the 1st/2nd Flatiron trail and down Gregory Canyon, only 4 miles but a 1200’ climb and a really cool variety of habitats. Besides the expected (ravens, chickadees, Steller’s jays, robins) i heard two calls that I didn’t recognize at all. Merlin id’d the calls as a spotted towhee and a western flycatcher. So now I’m thinking I have to go back up Gregory with binoculars and a chair. Not a birder though. #boulder #colorado #birding

(2) we recently switched our feeder mix to something with more sunflower seeds and I saw this tiny, unfamiliar woodpecker-acting bird. Merlin couldn't make anything of my terrible picture with my ancient phone but I eventually figured it out: white-breasted nuthatch. looking forward to seeing it again #colorado #birding
