As usual, i got up early to do some writing before heading out to work - todays task was finishing the blurbs for todays photos, then trying to get a head start on tomorrows.
Yeah, about that...
The nomenclature conventions used by the US Navy up until they merged their naming conventions with the Air Force in, I think, the mid-50s have always confused me, which i sometimes think was the point.
Especially this particular type of plane, built by this manufacturer.
PBY-5A.
You would think its a pre-production (Y) example of the 5th type in a designated series (PB), but no - Its the 5th version of the first aircraft in a designated series (PB) by Consolidated (manufacturer indicator Y).
But wait, it gets worse.
If another manufacturer builds some, the name changes.
Boeing, for instance, built some PBY's, and these are known as PB2B's, because Boeing had already built a plane (PBB) in the PB series, which meant that the next PB they designed may, or may not, be the PB3B.
I've written maybe 3 lines, my head hurts, and i want to go back to bed, because this is even more convoluted than the average Dan Brown novel.
Oh, did i mention that this particular plane was flying in Canadian colours, so should be technically known as a Canso, not a Catalina...
I'm going to work for a rest!
