L'Unità: Crisi del cherosene, Lufthansa cancella 20mila voli fino a ottobre: è il primo grande impatto di Hormuz sul trasporto aereo

Sul trasporto aereo arrivano i primi, significativi, impatti della crisi del cherosene scoppiata a seguito della guerra in Iran e del successivo blocco dello stretto di Hormuz da parte della Repubblica Islamica.
Se nei giorni scorsi era stata l’Agenzia Internazionale dell’Energia a fissare in sole sei settimane l’autonomia residua per l’Europa di “jet fuel”, il carburante per aerei, ora è uno dei giganti del settore che prende le prime contromisure alla crisi.
La compagnia aerea Lufthansa, dal 2025 di fatto proprietaria di ITA Airways, l’ex Alitalia, di cui ha il 41% del capitale e che salirà al 100 per cento entro il 2033 per un investimento complessivo di oltre 800 milioni di euro, ha annunciato che cancellerà 20mila voli a corto raggio programmati fino a ottobre per risparmiare carburante. I 20mila voli tolti dalla vendita sarebbero stati effettuati tra maggio e ottobre di quest’anno dalla CityLine, divisione regionale di Lufthansa la cui chiusura, inizialmente prevista per il 2027, è stata anticipata nei giorni scorsi.
Per il resto del gruppo, e soprattutto per il periodo estivo che rischia di essere un terno al lotto per i clienti, da Lufthansa sono arrivate ampie rassicurazioni: “Per i voli previsti nell’orario estivo, il gruppo prevede una fornitura di carburante ampiamente stabile. Lufthansa sta adottando una serie di misure a tal fine, tra cui l’approvvigionamento fisico di carburante per aerei e la copertura dei prezzi”, scrive in una nota il gruppo, che con una flotta di circa 900 aerei e più di 100mila dipendenti in tutto il mondo, Lufthansa è la compagnia più grande d’Europa.
Lufthansa non è l’unica compagnia aerea che si appresta o ha già messo in cantiere tagli dei propri voli per fare fronte all’emergenza carburanti: come riassume il Corriere della Sera, SAS ha cancellato mille partenze soltanto ad aprile, KLM-Air France ne annullerà 160 a maggio, Delta Air Lines limerà la rete di collegamenti del 3,5%, mentre anche in Asia sono previste importanti tagli alla programmazione dalle compagnie aeree locali come Cathay Pacific, Air Asia X, Air New Zealand e Qantas.

The first, significant impacts of the kerosene crisis, sparked by the war in Iran and the subsequent blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by the Islamic Republic, are arriving in air transport.

While the International Energy Agency had previously set the remaining autonomy for Europe – “jet fuel,” the fuel for aircraft – at just six weeks, now one of the sector’s giants is taking the first countermeasures to the crisis.

The airline Lufthansa, which is effectively the owner of ITA Airways, the former Alitalia, since 2025 (holding 41% of its capital and rising to 100% by 2033 for a total investment of over 800 million euros), has announced that it will cancel 20,000 short-haul flights scheduled until October to save fuel. The 20,000 flights withdrawn from sale would have been operated between May and October of this year by CityLine, Lufthansa’s regional division, the closure of which was initially planned for 2027 but has been brought forward in recent days.

For the rest of the group, and especially for the summer period which risks being a mixed bag for customers, Lufthansa has issued broad reassurances: “For flights scheduled for the summer timetable, the group anticipates a broadly stable fuel supply. Lufthansa is taking a series of measures to achieve this, including the physical procurement of fuel for aircraft and price coverage,” the group writes in a note. With a fleet of around 900 aircraft and more than 100,000 employees worldwide, Lufthansa is the largest airline in Europe.

Lufthansa is not the only airline preparing or already implementing cuts to its flights to cope with the fuel emergency: as the Corriere della Sera summarizes, SAS cancelled one thousand departures in April, KLM-Air France will cancel 160 in May, Delta Air Lines will trim its network connections by 3.5%, while significant cuts to schedules are also expected from local airlines such as Cathay Pacific, Air Asia X, Air New Zealand and Qantas in Asia.
