During Covid, a #Cuban medical brigade helped #Italians in Lombardy, which triggered #Calabria’s president Roberto Occhiuto to reach out to Cuba in 2022 to invite hundreds of #doctors to his region. Calabria is one of the poorest regions in Italy and its #healthcare has suffered greatly from staffing and other issues.

“Cuba will always be in my heart,” says an elderly Italian man whose life was saved by a Cuban doctor.

This Wednesday, the fourth and last photovoltaic #SolarEnergy project began to generate #electricity at the #LatinAmerican School of #Medicine (#ELAM), promoted by the #solidarity network #MediCubaEurope.

With a total installed power of 208 kWp, around 50% of the centre's energy demand is covered.

A mural illustrates the #SolarPanels on the roofs, contributed by international solidarity to contribute to this beautiful #Cuban internationalist project. This initiative is part of the #EnergyForLife program, which seeks to guarantee a stable and #sustainable supply to Cuban #health institutions in the context of the current #energy crisis, thus strengthening health services to the population.

As of Wednesday, more than 8,000 #Italian #medical and scientific professionals have signed an open letter acknowledging their indebtedness to #Cuban #doctors and condemning the tightening of the 65-year US embargo on #Cuba by President Donald #Trump as he threatens “take” the island.

“Over the decades, Cuba has built a health system that was considered an international model, capable of guaranteeing universal access to care even in limited resource conditions. Since 1963, more than 600,000 Cuban health workers have served in more than 160 countries, including #Italy,” states the letter addressed to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Health Minister Orazio Schillaci.
