Limia Díaz is a historian, writer, member of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (known as UNEAC, its Spanish-language acronym), and director of the TV program MARCAS. He is also the author of the bilingual book Patria y cultura en Revolución (Homeland and Culture in Revolution).

Limia Díaz now provides historical context to the recent revelations by Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermudez that Havana is holding talks with the #Trump administration after Washington imposed a blockade of #petroleum shipments to #Cuba and threatened the overthrow of the #Caribbean nation’s revolutionary government.

In a diplomatic note to the embassy, the ministry said the administration’s fuel blockade was aimed at “causing the greatest possible harm to the Cuban economy, the well-being of the people, and their standard of living.”

“The Ministry interprets as shameless the claim by the diplomatic mission to access a good as a privilege that it denies to the Cuban people,” the ministry said, according to a State Dept. translation. The note was dated March 9...

The #US and #Cuba have been adversaries for 65 years. Officials in Washington and Havana have held direct talks aimed at resolving differences, #DíazCanel said last week. The administration has not made its demands of Havana public.

The #US has sought to intensify pressure on #Cuba since seizing Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro in January. #Trump has since cut off Venezuelan #oil shipments to Cuba and threatened to impose tariffs on any country selling oil to the country, stating that Cuba would receive “no more oil or money” as a result of his actions.

Another tanker, the Sea Horse, loaded nearly 200,000 barrels of diesel in late January off Cyprus from another tanker, according to Kpler data.

It exited the Mediterranean on 13 February and has since been sailing west across the Atlantic, slowing down between late Feb. and early March and following an erratic course, the tracker indicated.

The #US has ratcheted up pressure this year on its longtime foe #Cuba since capturing the Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro – Cuba’s most important foreign benefactor – in January. The US president, Donald #Trump, cut off Venezuelan #oil shipments to Cuba and threatened to put tariffs on any country that sold oil to Cuba, strangling the #Caribbean island’s already antiquated grid.

Cuba said on Friday that it was in talks with the US with the hope of defusing the crisis. Trump has said in recent weeks that Cuba is on the verge of collapse and is eager to make a deal with the US.
