Musa Alves, a Brazilian-American designer living in New Orleans, and Carolina Leyva, a #CubanAmerican from Florida who is studying medicine in Havana, have joined forces to support the #Cuban people amid a crisis caused in large part by US economic warfare against the island.

Musa, founder of #FromNolaToCuba, and Carolina, founder of #CorazónConCuba, are building cultural bridges between the two countries and delivering aid directly to the Cuban people.

This is a story of people helping people and grassroots solidarity in the face of #US collective punishment against Cuba. Musa and Carolina talk about what it means to travel to Cuba not just as visitors, but as lifelines for families and communities.

Rep. #PramilaJayapal (D-WA) and Rep. #JonathanJackson (D-IL) traveled to Cuba last week, delivering an unusually blunt assessment of #US policy.

After meeting with Cubans from across the political spectrum, and visiting a hospital impacted by the #Trump-imposed #oil #blockade, they described US policy in stark terms, equating it to warfare against the Cuban people.

BotB's Liz Oliva and Drop Site’s Ryan Grim recently visited the William Soler Pediatric #Hospital in #Havana where they spoke with the chief anesthesiologist, Alioth Fernández, and the parents of some of his patients.

Cuba's public and free #healthcare system was long considered one of the best in the world. Its doctors are top-notch, dedicated and caring. This is a story about what happens when the most powerful country in the world uses economic warfare to deprive a smaller country from obtaining the #medicine it needs to save lives.

The #Cuban government cannot access the international financial system, cannot import freely, cannot buy what its children need — not because of indifference, but because #US sanctions have destroyed the country’s economy and drained the #PublicHealth budget.

Russia sends another oil tanker to Cuba: “The Strait of Hormuz is open for us.”

Russian oil tankers go where they want, reaching Cuba and crossing the Strait of Hormuz while at war. Light and gasoline will arrive in the blackout of the Castro island: another Russian oil tanker will arrive in Cuba, despite the oil blockade imposed by the Trump administration. Moscow is challenging the Republican order that has imposed an embargo on supplies and plunged Havana into darkness – Sergei Tsivilev, the Russian Minister of Energy, announced this: “A ship of the Russian Federation has forced the blockade. A second is now in the process of loading. We will not leave the Cubans in difficulty.”

Only at the beginning of this week did the oil tanker Anatoly Kolodkin – sanctioned by the United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom – unload tons and tons of oil into the port of Matanzas. The second Russian docking, which will take place this week, highlights the contradictions of the turbulent tycoon in charge of the White House, who stated he was not opposed to supplies from Moscow despite the toughening of US economic sanctions against the island, as part of a strategy of maximum pressure – a “cruel” strategy, as the Cuban authorities defined it – imposed immediately after the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Only for Moscow – and other Tehran friends, such as Beijing and New Delhi – remains open the Strait of Hormuz, blocked since the beginning of the joint attack campaign by Tel Aviv and Washington. This was declared by Yuri Ushakov, Foreign Policy Advisor to the Kremlin: “For us, Hormuz is open.” Today, a draft resolution proposed by Bahrain will be voted on at the United Nations Security Council to create a “defensive” force to protect maritime traffic from rockets from Tehran. For the Pasdaran, it is a “provocative” action that will only “complicate the situation” in the area.
