Díaz-Canel addressed the closing of the 11th Plenary Session of the Central Committee of the #CommunistParty of Cuba on December 13, 2025, in #Havana.

The meeting was held amid extreme challenges facing the Cuban people, a product of more than 60 years of economic warfare by the #US government. The US #embargo is a “siege especially designed to punish rebel #Cuba for its bold effort to remain free, independent, and sovereign just a few miles from the empire,” Díaz-Canel said.

At a hearing last week, Rep. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) asked Katherine Dueholm, the principal deputy assistant secretary for the State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, what the #US was doing to stop #Cuba’s #MedicalCooperation missions. “We are taking a global push to encourage countries to step out of this program,” Dueholm answered.

Cuba’s international medical cooperation missions have operated in dozens of countries worldwide since the 1960s. They usually provide healthcare for the poorest of the poor in Global South countries. Cuban doctors volunteer to go on these missions, where they are paid many times more than what they make in Cuba.

The ships are the Ocean Mariner and the Eugenia Gas, both flying the Liberian flag. The Eugenia Gas is already sailing toward the port of Moa after loading at Pemex. The Ocean Mariner is still loading at Pemex before departing for Cuba five hours ago.

These shipments aim to alleviate the severe #EnergyCrisis and massive blackouts affecting the island.

These shipments come at a time of heightened tensions due to a recent naval blockade announced by the #UnitedStates against tankers transporting fuel to the island.

The Mexican government has described these shipments as "humanitarian aid" amid a critical electricity emergency in Cuba.
