June 11, 2026

This Wednesday, the fourth and last photovoltaic #SolarEnergy project began to generate #electricity at the #LatinAmerican School of #Medicine (#ELAM), promoted by the #solidarity network #MediCubaEurope.

With a total installed power of 208 kWp, around 50% of the centre's energy demand is covered.

A mural illustrates the #SolarPanels on the roofs, contributed by international solidarity to contribute to this beautiful #Cuban internationalist project. This initiative is part of the #EnergyForLife program, which seeks to guarantee a stable and #sustainable supply to Cuban #health institutions in the context of the current #energy crisis, thus strengthening health services to the population.

The US government is manufacturing a pretext to attack Cuba, affirmed Hal Klepak, professor emeritus of #LatinAmerican and other strategic studies in military history at the Royal Military College of Canada.

“The issue of Cuba being a threat can only be seen as a pretext to prepare #US opinion, or at the very least, the MAGA base, for accepting an intervention”, said Klepak. “The idea that the Cubans would choose this moment to attack the US is an absurd assertion.”

According to Klepak, Cuba’s #military has a defensive posture and would not attack the US.

"Groovin'" is a song written by American singer-songwriters #FelixCavaliere and #EddieBrigati, initially recorded by their group #theYoungRascals in 1967. Cavaliere was inspired to compose the song by his girlfriend Adrienne Buccheri, whom he only got to meet on Sundays amidst heavy touring and recording. Musically, the song differs from most of the band's previous output, leaving the #garageRock genre for #LatinAmerican influences, such as #baião. Lyrically.

Use, rivalry "to the stars" with China: two astronomical observatories blocked

The rivalry between the United States and China is at an all-time high. It is precisely the case to say after the White House pressured Argentina and Chile to review two Chinese projects for the construction of telescopes in the Andean deserts. Astronomers fear that this could hinder research. At the foot of the Argentine Andes, the enormous radiotelescope designed by Beijing rises in one of the most prestigious locations in the world for star observation, under a sky unpolluted by light pollution. It is also located on the opposite side of the planet from Beijing, offering China a window on half of the sky it would otherwise be unable to observe. But the telescope installed at the Ceso observatory in the province of San Juan does not detect any signals. After repeated pressure from the U.S. government, Argentina halted the completion of the project. Without key components, the telescope now lies disassembled, with its giant antenna pointed at the sky but “blind.”

The stars over South America have become nerve centers of a geopolitical struggle, with high-ranking American officials seeking to block astronomers’ plans for fear that China could use them for military purposes. The Trump administration claims to be applying an updated version of the Monroe Doctrine, partly to counter China’s growing influence in the Western Hemisphere. China, a key trading partner for many Latin American countries, starting with Argentina, is seeking to build scientific and security ties. Its relations in the region could be the subject of discussion in official talks that will take place this week in Beijing between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Last year, Chile blocked a Chinese project for an astronomical observatory in the Atacama desert, following strong U.S. pressure. And in the case of the Ceso radiotelescope, which would be the largest of its kind in South America, authorities detained some key components in customs for nine months. According to a document from the head of the Argentine government’s cabinet, procedural violations in renewing the agreement with China prevented the project’s realization.
