Cuba Street: A Model of Community Hygiene in Old Havana’s Heart

This article describes a concerted effort by local residents, the city administration, and private businesses to end the problem of trash accumulation in a part of Cuba’s capital city, Havana. Since it was published in October 2025, this problem has become more acute and widespread as a consequence of the U.S. oil blockade, which, since January 3, 2026, has stopped virtually all petroleum shipments from reaching Cuba. The resulting fuel shortage, has, among other things, made it difficult to almost impossible for garbage trucks to operate and regularly collect trash. The setbacks due to this cruel and unusual escalation of the U.S. blockade notwithstanding, this article describes an example of the initiatives ordinary Cubans take to improve their daily lives in the middle of extreme adversities caused by Washington’s decades-old economic war.

The US delegation last week proposed bringing Starlink satellite internet to the island and allowing free connectivity. It also urged the Cuban regime to make economic changes to attract foreign capital, grow the private sector and transition to a market-based economy.

These economic changes, the State Department official said, would also need to include ways to compensate #US citizens and corporations that had assets and properties confiscated in the 1960s.

#Cuba would also need to release political prisoners...and allow greater political freedom.

Hundreds of Cuban #women gathered at Mariana Grajales Park in Havana to denounce the #Trump administration’s intensification of the #US government 60-year economic war on Cuba.

For women, the impact is felt both in their professional and personal lives, as many bear the primary responsibility for running households and caring for children and the sick, tasks that have become increasingly difficult under the tightened #embargo. This is the case of Cecilia Valdés, a caregiver daughter who explains that her mother has been unable to access #medication due to restrictions caused by the #embargo.

Tuesday’s gathering also paid tribute to the 96th anniversary of Vilma Espín, the late leader of the organization, who devoted much of her life’s work to the empowerment of women within the #CubanRevolution.

Cuba's public and free #healthcare system was long considered one of the best in the world. Its doctors are top-notch, dedicated and caring. This is a story about what happens when the most powerful country in the world uses economic warfare to deprive a smaller country from obtaining the #medicine it needs to save lives.

The #Cuban government cannot access the international financial system, cannot import freely, cannot buy what its children need — not because of indifference, but because #US sanctions have destroyed the country’s economy and drained the #PublicHealth budget.

Hundreds of people from across the US and around the world are traveling to Cuba as part of the #NuestraAméricaConvoy. At a time when the island is facing one of its deepest economic crises in decades, marked by fuel shortages, rolling blackouts, and growing hardship, these travelers arrive with a clear message: #solidarity.

For years, Cuba has endured the effects of the US economic war, a policy that restricts trade, limits access to essential goods, and complicates daily life for millions. In recent years, the situation has deteriorated further, with inflation, migration, and widespread shortages affecting nearly every aspect of life on the island.

Now, activists, organizers, and ordinary citizens are choosing to witness these realities firsthand and to challenge #US restrictions on #oil shipments to #Cuba.

Cuba rejects US Embassy request to bring in fuel, calls it ‘shameless’

In a diplomatic note to the embassy, the ministry said the administration’s fuel blockade was aimed at “causing the greatest possible harm to the Cuban economy, the well-being of the people, and their standard of living.”

“The Ministry interprets as shameless the claim by the diplomatic mission to access a good as a privilege that it denies to the Cuban people,” the ministry said, according to a State Dept. translation. The note was dated March 9...

The #US and #Cuba have been adversaries for 65 years. Officials in Washington and Havana have held direct talks aimed at resolving differences, #DíazCanel said last week. The administration has not made its demands of Havana public.

While the world watches other wars, the U.S. has quietly strangled Cuba with an oil blockade that's plunged 11 million people into blackouts, shortages, and despair.

No fuel imports for months → nationwide power grid collapse → families without lights, food rotting, hospitals struggling.

This isn't 'diplomacy'—it's collective punishment, called out by UN experts as a violation of international law and a grave humanitarian threat. #CubaBlockade #EndTheEmbargo #HumanRights

Islandwide blackout hits Cuba as it struggles with energy crisis

Officials in Cuba report an islandwide blackout in the country of some 11 million people as its energy and economic crises deepen. The Ministry of Energy and Mines notes a “complete disconnection” of the country’s electrical system and says it is investigating. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Friday warned that the island had not received oil shipments in more than three months and that it was operating on solar power, natural gas and thermoelectric plants. Cuba has blamed its woes on a U.S. energy blockade. U.S. President Donald Trump warned in January of tariffs on any country that would sell or provide oil to the island.

The crisis is particularly dire among children with cancer. #Cuba’s free healthcare system—which prioritizes the health of the people instead of industry profits, as in the #US—once boasted a #pediatric cancer survival rate of 80%, on par with the world’s wealthy nations. Now that’s down to around 65% as the blockade has forced healthcare providers to modify treatment protocols and medications.

“The situation is very serious at the moment. It was already in terms of acquiring supplies and medicines. But now it is intensifying and complicated with other aspects,” Dr. Forteza Saéz, an oncologist at Havana’s University of Medical Sciences, told La Jornada...
