In a diplomatic note to the embassy, the ministry said the administration’s fuel blockade was aimed at “causing the greatest possible harm to the Cuban economy, the well-being of the people, and their standard of living.”

“The Ministry interprets as shameless the claim by the diplomatic mission to access a good as a privilege that it denies to the Cuban people,” the ministry said, according to a State Dept. translation. The note was dated March 9...

The #US and #Cuba have been adversaries for 65 years. Officials in Washington and Havana have held direct talks aimed at resolving differences, #DíazCanel said last week. The administration has not made its demands of Havana public.

The crisis is particularly dire among children with cancer. #Cuba’s free healthcare system—which prioritizes the health of the people instead of industry profits, as in the #US—once boasted a #pediatric cancer survival rate of 80%, on par with the world’s wealthy nations. Now that’s down to around 65% as the blockade has forced healthcare providers to modify treatment protocols and medications.

Hickey’s solidarity with Cuba began through his admiration for its athletes, especially Olympians Alberto Juantorena, track runner, and boxer Teófilo Stevenson, who turned down lucrative professional contracts in order to remain loyal to the Cuban Revolution. In the 1990s, while developing #Ireland’s pancreas transplant programme, Hickey met a Cuban transplant surgeon in France who invited him to visit the island.

In 1999, Hickey travelled to Havana and was ‘absolutely captivated’ by the people and society. He founded the Irish Cuban Medical Association, which shipped ten 40-foot containers of medical supplies to Cuba...
