Il pallone italiano non si è mai ritrovato così sgonfio, triste e solitario, calciato fuori dal rettangolo di gioco senza tanti complimenti. Tre settimane dopo la terza eliminazione consecutiva dal Mondiale, la conferma sullo scarso livello di rendimento dell’intero movimento arriva da Europa League e Conference League, con l’uscita di scena di Bologna e Fiorentina. I rossoblù escono con sette gol incassati nel doppio confronto con l’Aston Villa, mentre la Viola subisce quattro reti complessive dal Crystal Palace, 13esimo in Premier League. Un altro giovedì nero che certifica il momento più buio della storia del calcio italiano.
E pensare che negli ultimi anni almeno la piccola Conference League era servita a tappare le falle del nostro sistema: la vittoria della Roma, le due finali perse dalla Fiorentina. Da quando è stata introdotta nella stagione 2021/22, mai era successo che una squadra italiana non arrivasse almeno alle semifinali delle tre competizioni europee. È uno dei record negativi fatto registrare in questa stagione dal calcio italiano.

La doppia eliminazione delle ultime due superstiti certifica un primato: per la prima volta dopo 7 anni, non ci sono appunto squadre italiane nelle semifinali delle tre competizioni europee. In quell’occasione (la terza competizione europea non c’era), nei quarti la Juventus fu eliminata dall’Ajax e in Europa League il Napoli dall’Arsenal. E proprio in quella stagione l’Italia aveva fallito la prima qualificazione al Mondiale.

The Italian football (soccer) team has never been so deflated, sad, and lonely, kicked out of the playing field without many compliments. Three weeks after the third consecutive elimination from the World Cup, confirmation of the poor level of performance of the entire movement arrives from the Europa League and Conference League, with the elimination of Bologna and Fiorentina. The “rossoblù” (red and blue) exit with seven goals conceded in the two-leg tie against Aston Villa, while the “Viola” (violet) suffered four goals overall from Crystal Palace, 13th in the Premier League. And think about it, in recent years at least the small Conference League was used to fill the gaps in our system: Roma’s victory, the two finals lost by Fiorentina. It is one of the negative records recorded this season by Italian football.

The double elimination of the last two survivors certifies a record: for the first time in 7 years, there are no Italian teams in the semifinals of the three European competitions. In that occasion (the third competition European wasn't there), in the quarter-finals, Juventus was eliminated by Ajax and in the Europa League, Napoli was eliminated by Arsenal. And precisely in that season, Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time.

From Inter’s “Triplete” (three-peat) victory, it has been 16 years since an Italian team has won the Champions League. So far, the longest drought went back to the Seventies, from 1969 to 1985, when Juventus triumphed.

Not only that: in four of the last six Champions League matches, all Italian teams were stopped in the eighth round.

In the Europa League, formerly the UEFA Cup, there has been only one success between 1999 (with Parma under Alberto Malesani) and 2026, that of Atalanta two years ago, counting the two finals lost by Inter and Roma.

I soldi “li abbiamo nel cassetto, sono soldi degli italiani”, ribadisce. “Domani saremo in piazza Duomo a Milano, con migliaia di lavoratori, di agricoltori, di nonni con bambini per chiedere all'Europa non soldi (noi non vogliamo i soldi dei tedeschi e dei francesi), ma “vogliamo semplicemente poter usare i soldi che gli italiani ci danno con le loro tasse per aiutare gli italiani in difficoltà”, sottolinea.
“Nonostante le due guerre massacranti in corso, le regole europee – il Patto di stabilità, i vincoli al tetto degli aiuti di Stato – non ci permettono di usare i soldi degli italiani per aiutare altri italiani, perchè la follia è che von der Leyen e i commissari europei ci dicono ‘è vero, la situazione è grave, stiamo male ma non stiamo ancora malissimo. E' come se uno dicesse ‘il malato è grave, ma siccome non è ancora moribondo aspettate a operarlo: è demenziale. O l'Europa ci permette di cambiare queste regole, o lo facciamo da soli”.

E che è successo?”, chiede Berlinguer all’alpinista che prima di replicare beve un sorso di latte dal bicchiere per poi sputarlo subito dopo. “Beh, vabbè ma le sembra una scena da fare questa in televisione?”, lo richiama la conduttrice. “Eh c’era dentro una formica, ora lo bevo sul serio“, la replica di Corona.
Per alcuni un piccolo incidente televisivo, per altri una gag ben orchestrata.
