As of Wednesday, more than 8,000 #Italian #medical and scientific professionals have signed an open letter acknowledging their indebtedness to #Cuban #doctors and condemning the tightening of the 65-year US embargo on #Cuba by President Donald #Trump as he threatens “take” the island.

“Over the decades, Cuba has built a health system that was considered an international model, capable of guaranteeing universal access to care even in limited resource conditions. Since 1963, more than 600,000 Cuban health workers have served in more than 160 countries, including #Italy,” states the letter addressed to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Health Minister Orazio Schillaci.

At the time, her colleagues at Cuba’s Center for Molecular Immunology were working on a new drug, and Teresita joined them in their research.

She soon realized the #medication could actually help her mother, so she started giving it to her. Teresita eventually became the leader of that team, and the results she witnessed with her mother became the inspiration for a medication that could be a game changer for #Alzheimer’s treatment.

Rooted in the idea that #healthcare is a human right, Cuba’s #medical education system seeks to train doctors who are both scientifically skilled and socially committed. Many #ELAM students do not wait until graduation to put those values into practice.

Dr. Dayana Couto Núñez, president of the Cuban Society of #Gynecology and #Obstetrics, says shortages of medicines, medical supplies, technology and fuel are affecting surgeries, ultrasounds, diagnostic tests and maternal care.

According to Couto, the situation is making it harder to detect congenital malformations early and to care for premature and low-birth-weight babies, who often require specialized medication and high-tech equipment.
