"A proposed #California state bill would require foods made with corn flour to meet the same fortification standards as wheat products, a move lawmakers hope will reduce the likelihood of serious birth defects in babies born to Latina mothers, as first reported by Cal Matters.

The California State Assembly Committee on Health passed Assembly Bill 1830 by bipartisan vote in March, and the Appropriations Committee approved the bill earlier this month; it will now go to the full Assembly for a vote. The measure would require manufacturers to add folic acid, a form of vitamin B9 that is vitally important for healthy pregnancies, to corn masa flour, by January 2026."
