Stop blaming human nature for ...

Intoxicated by the heady ending of Season 3 of Bonusfamiljen, I went ahead and ordered the Blu-Rays of Fanny och Alexander and Sommarnattens leende, from The Criterion Collection.
It's kind of expensive, but I'm justifying it by framing it as me sticking it to the man: owning physical media rather than relying on streaming.

Is this Omelas story really about that suffering child? Or is it more about how we wall its suffering out, then invite it back in? The second of several parts.

My first reaction was to be afraid This ardor was a snare the Devil had laid; And I avoided you as a temptation That might stand in the way of my salvation. But finally I knew, O gracious beauty, That passion need not be at odds with duty, That I…
A quotation from Hannah Arendt
In their moral justification, the argument of the lesser evil has played a prominent role. If you are confronted with two evils, thus the argument runs, it is your duty to opt for the lesser one, whereas it is irresponsible to refuse to choose altogether. […] Politically, the weakness of the argument has always been that those who choose the lesser evil forget very quickly that they chose evil.Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) German-American philosopher, political theorist

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man’s oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

a few notes on a Linda Rising's talk
"Realize up front that this is hard".
Cognitive dissonance: contradictory "evidence" causes severe cognitive discomfort.
* We are not rational decision-makers
* but we are good at explaining after-the-fact why we made a decision – a pattern called rationalization.
Two thirds of people will not consider an idea until "somebody they know pretty well, is doing it, is happy with it, talks about it […] so maybe i might think about it".
To convince,
* you must address: "What's in it for me?" – requires empathy;
* you can use the values of your opponent. (Loyalty or fairness?)
A pattern of personal touch: walk a mile in the other's shoes
Another pattern: "Give it a try"
Another pattern: listen
Another pattern: ask for something personal

A quotation from Joseph Heller
The chaplain had mastered, in a moment of divine intuition, the handy technique of protective rationalization, and he was exhilarated by his discovery. It was miraculous. It was almost no trick at all, he saw, to turn vice into virtue and slander into truth, impotence into abstinence, arrogance into humility, plunder into philanthropy, thievery into honor, blasphemy into wisdom, brutality into patriotism, and sadism into justice. Anybody could do it; it required no brains at all. It merely required no character.Joseph Heller (1923-1999) American novelist
Catch-22, ch. 34 “Thanksgiving” (1961)

@esmie The word you’re looking for is “rationalization.” It’s when people explain their actions in a way that makes them seem okay, even if they’re not. They do this to feel better about themselves or to avoid feeling guilty or anxious.
