#AbrahamLincoln had a puzzling relationship to #religion. For several years, I researched the role of religion in his life for the Lincoln Home National Historic Site in #Springfield, #Illinois. In 2021, my research focused on religion in the early decades of Springfield’s history through the period of Lincoln’s residency there, which had a formative impact on Lincoln’s own religious faith.

Consideration of Lincoln’s assassination must grapple with a question that can be posed of few other “great” historical figures: What is it about an event that took place 160 years ago that still, to this day, rouses a sense of loss?

A quotation from Abraham Lincoln

This declared indifference, but as I must think, covert real zeal for the spread of slavery, I cannot but hate. I hate it because of the monstrous injustice of slavery itself. I hate it because it deprives our Republican example of its just influence in the world — enables the enemies of free institutions, with plausibility, to taunt us as hypocrites — causes the real friends of freedom to doubt our sincerity, and especially because it forces so many really good men amongst ourselves into an open war with the very fundamental principles of civil liberty — criticizing the Declaration of Independence, and insisting that there is no right principle of action but self-interest.

A quotation from Lincoln

In this and like communities, public sentiment is everything. With public sentiment, nothing can fail; without it, nothing can succeed. Consequently, he who moulds public sentiment goes deeper than he who enacts statutes or pronounces decisions. He makes statutes and decisions possible or impossible to be executed.
