I was just reminded of the time I did a little study of bee butts to highlight the number of bees native to my U.S. state of California. Three of them are bumble bees.

Sorry that I have been away. Gardening season is busy for me. In a few hours, I'll be headed to Raleigh, NC for the Arts in Bloom Festival at the NC Art Museum.

Will report on all of this as soon as I return. Until then enjoy my blooming Carolina Jessamine (Gelsemium sempervirens), a native vine that has stayed green even through the very cold days we had. Flowers popped out as one of the first flowers for my #NativeBees and other pollinators.

Spring will start under severe extreme heat. Today, I was lucky & relieved to see two more native bee species back & foraging. May they have what they need for this life & their next gen.

🐝 Really! There is a type of native bee here that ONLY pollinates blueberry bush flowers like the ones from my garden I photographed below.

🌼 Notice how the flower has a tiny opening at the bottom. Bees who can extract the pollen use specialized high frequency "buzz pollination".

🐝A local bee, the Southeastern Blueberry Bee (Habropoda laboriosa) does this. So, by having blueberry bushes, I help a population of rare pollinators.

💪 You can help populations near you, even if it's just by planting native plants.
