MX Linux – Midweight Simple Stable Desktop OS

@daviddd
I think the first one I actually worked with (not just tested installing) was #MEPIS.

@dangillmor it's a pity there are not open source operating system "distributions" that vet "package maintainer" individuals for all of the thousands of software application packages that most people might actually need, who then function as gatekeepers to weed out bad software releases, not to mention imposters, from infiltrating a distribution system of cryptographically signed and QA'd software, that is verified to comply with "distribution" policies.

Some day, perhaps.

#Devuan
#MEPIS
#BodhiLinux
#LinuxMint
#PCLinuxOS
#TrustedBSD
#Tails
#SubgraphOS
#QubesOS
#AlpineLinux

So, #Linux users of #Mastodon, what is your recommendation for a #distro for a techy person who used to use Linux ( #MEPIS was my favorite flavor back when I was using #Nix regularly, but I did run #Mint, #Ubuntu (12.04 or 12.10 was the last version I ran exclusively as the main OS on one of my PCs...which, was, 11ish years ago? Rude), #Xubuntu, #Lubuntu, #Kubuntu (getting the picture?), #PuppyLinux, #ArchLinux, #Slackware (is that still a thing?), #KaliLinux (Started using it when it was #BackTrack, though), #FreeBSD, #FedoraLinux (12 or 13?), #RedHat (#RHEL) etc.

You get the picture...I used mostly #Canonical / #Debian based OSes, but had a sprinkling of #RPM based, and others. I did some small modifications to the #Kernel and such, Almost got MEPIS running on an old #IBM #ThinkPad, and was able to salvage a lot of data from "dead," machines thanks to 'Nix.

These days, however, I just want one that works. I have way too much going on to mod and have to mess with it constantly to keep it working.

@cmccullough @Vivaldi Oh sweet! Haven't really looked into it, I honestly am really digging how #Windows11 functions on it, but I spent a lot of time using #Ubuntu, #MEPIS, #etc. back when Windows Virus (Vista) came out, until like 2015 (16? 17?), when I moved back to using Windows as my primary personals.

I have a #PineBook (been there, unused, for like 4+ years) on one of my shelves, but I need to reimage it as I borked it by trying to mod the #kernel (if memory serves) of the pre-loaded OS.

Confession : la première distribution Linux que j’ai installé, c’était #Mandrake. La première que j’ai installé, c’était #Mepis.
I have a new video up on #lbry

There is one amazing blend of Linux distribution that would set date in the computer world, would be to use the #Cinnamon desktop with #MXlinux / #Mepis packages like the package manager. One would provide a flexible, elegant, fully featured desktop; the other neat user tools that makes life easier for hardware/software management.
Please let me know your toots!
