Just Ride. Every Day. It’s That Simple.

The title of this piece echoes what the great bike racer Eddie Merckx said: “Ride as much or as little, or as long or as short as you feel. But ride.” As March wraps up I’m lookin…

Bike Style Life

Day 1 #30DaysOfBiking: To work, with my indoor parking that provides a view of the Washington State capitol, and home through downtown and along Budd Bay Inlet with sunshine creating my #BikeShadow to keep me company on my breezy ride.

Miles: 7.91 (not that it matters for this challenge)

Day 1 #30DaysOfBiking: Today I managed to do my version of a triathlon, which means that I did some yoga, walked a certain number of steps, and rode my bike on the same day. Design your own! http://bikestylespokane.com/2023/06/11/choose-your-own-adventure-creating-your-version-of-an-athlon/

And whaddaya know--I first wrote about this concept in 2019 on #30DaysOfBiking Day 2 http://bikestylespokane.com/2019/04/02/30daysofbiking-day-2-my-version-of-a-triathlon/. Good grief, I was even doing some of the exact same work tasks, like working on the Target Zero/SHSP plan update.

Day 2 #30DaysOfBiking: Super short sunshiney sashay a few blocks to check whether the neighborhood "farmette" stand had any eggs. Alas, no, but a beautiful ride. All I could squeeze in today-- lots of meetings, worked late.

But I did pull off another athlon thanks to a brief lunchtime yoga practice and walking during and between meetings to loosen up my stiff sprained knee.

Day 3 #30DaysOfBiking: Thought I had spotted a hole between cloudbursts to dash down to the neighborhood bakery and get a bagel for lunch. I misjudged. Rain cape only handled part of the problem.

Day 4 #30DaysOfBiking: To the office today. Midday quick jaunt for takeout sushi took me through the luscious scent of honeysuckle in the gardens I get to ride through. Rode home in cooler temps after an interesting evening talk by Julie Ratner WalkAboutWithJulie.com on how trees communicate and the health benefits of time in the forest. Ever listened to a tree's electrical impulses turned into music? Love Oly Parks/Rec classes.

Day 5 #30DaysOfBiking: A quick checking the box ride once around our neighborhood loop before getting on the road for a weekend trip. It counts. Every ride counts. I enjoyed the blooming flowers, felt the breeze in my hair, smiled at my neighbors out for their walks.

Plus, by day's end I had done another of my "athlons" http://bikestylespokane.com/2023/06/11/choose-your-own-adventure-creating-your-version-of-an-athlon/. Morning yoga, lots of walking as part of travel, and that baby bike ride.

Day 6 #30DaysOfBiking: Checked the box again by borrowing my friend's bike and riding to the end of her block and back before we went out for coffee. Travel sometimes presents challenges but I had planned ahead. She's smaller than I am so it was a little like using a clown car and I had to laugh.

Days 7 and 8 #30DaysOfBiking: Very quick rides to keep on track. No big adventures but sticking with it means I thought about riding my bike every day so far. For me part of the point is thinking about how biking fits into a life that involves a lot of working from home. #BikeTooter #30Days

Days 9 and 10 #30DaysOfBiking: 9=quick lap around neighborhood loop. 10=beautiful sunny ride to/from work. Rode home in shirt sleeves! Love seeing, feeling, hearing the season change. Walking + yoga means I keep doing my athlons too. http://bikestylespokane.com/2023/06/11/choose-your-own-adventure-creating-your-version-of-an-athlon/

Day 11 #30DaysOfBiking: Rode to work in sun warm enough that I had too much coat on. I'll take it.

Day 12 #30DaysOfBiking: Rode home via Wayside Vegan Cafe in downtown Olympia, where I stopped for some delicious takeout.
Day 13: A quick helmet-free jaunt to the nearest Little Free Library to drop off a couple of books. Love this one; it's called Barbara's Book Barn and it's on my route to Squaxin Park. Breeze in my hair was awesome too.

Day 14 #30DaysOfBiking: Rode over to a friend's house to share some fresh baked muffins, then down to the Olympia Farmers Market to buy a lot of tomato and pepper plants. I know I still need to keep them covered but I couldn't wait. What a gorgeous day for a ride! Saw plenty of people out there agreeing with me.

Day 15 #30DaysOfBiking: Rode to a meeting, then the office, then to improv class at the end of the day, then home. Sunny with cold brisk wind. Delightful even if my ears felt like potato chips in the morning.

Day 16: To the office again and back again. Slightly warmer, still very windy.

Day 16 #30DaysOfBiking more: "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly. I don't know why she swallowed a fly."

Well, children, she swallowed whatever that insect was because she was riding her bike with her mouth open. That'll teach her. Maybe.

Day 17 #30DaysOfBiking: Today was Go Orange day at my agency for work zone safety awareness. My orange garb went from professional during the day (walked to the nearby rhododendron park at lunch for the pic) to casual after work when I rode with my sweetheart to a local farmstand (scored fresh eggs and a big bunch of asparagus).

#BikeTooter #BicyclesChangeLives #BikeEverywhere #BikeHappy #cycling #BikeDates #BuyLocal #RoadSafety #Orange4Safety

Given my Go Orange post above I need to note that I want more engineering, not reliance on an orange jacket, to reduce chances of a serious or fatal crash. Drivers still run right into work zones with all the cones and advance notice and traffic controls you could ask for; the color doesn't confer magic protection. This is like wearing a pink ribbon for awareness of breast cancer, not a countermeasure.

Day 18 #30DaysOfBiking: Quick lap around my neighborhood loop to check the box before the end of the day feeling the wind in my hair and looking at the blooming trees and hearing the birds and smiling at neighbors. Come to think of it, that does more than check the box.

Day 19 #30DaysOfBiking: Sunny ride to the farmstand again. Absolutely LOVE our neighborhood location! Parks, water, farms, good bakery, my doctor offices and downtown all an easy walk or bike ride. It's a 15-minute city by bike-- well, 17 to the doc, farther to my hairdresser, but all bikeable or I could take transit 5 minutes from my front door. So lucky!

Day 20 #30DaysOfBiking: Rode sweep for my neighborhood group participating in the Earth Day Market Ride. Absolutely gorgeous day in the morning for it! http://bikestylespokane.com/2024/04/20/earth-day-market-ride-2024/

What a gorgeous day for the annual event! Unlike last year’s somewhat gray day, this year we got blue skies, sunshine, and warming temperatures. I kept up my streak for #30DaysOfBiking, which…

@BarbChamberlain the egg cartons are adorable!
@lmc Aren't they though?! Came for the eggs, will return for the artwork!

@BarbChamberlain

Makes me think of a scene from "Happy Days," where Richie is asking for tips from Fonzie about riding.

Fonzie responds "Don’t smile.”

Richie sobers. “Why not? It's not cool?"

“You get bugs in your teeth.”

@BarbChamberlain: Oh, right, it's indeed that season again. Happened to me a few days ago the first time this year, too. Well, at least nearly. Had to cough and spit it out again somehow.
@BarbChamberlain which Gazelle model is that? They make such beautiful bikes!
@kimu Medeo from 2019. They don't sell that model with those handlebars any more, which is a shame. Love my Zelda!
@BarbChamberlain what bag is that?
@GordonOfSeattle Can't get them any more, unfortunately. They're super old and I'm drawing a blank on the name of the Seattle-based company that made them. The straps make them convertible into a backpack, although not super comfy for that. Tons of room.
