@nickzoic i think it's a 6-7-8 someone stuck on a 24 and maybe even it's the right chain, just the wrong front derailleur
or the front derailleur is subtly bent
i have provided some corrective force, we will see what happens next

previous owner said FUCK IT WE ROLL i guess
wonder how long it took to wear through that metal?
Anna's old 21-speed steel frame has about the same chain, but its front derailleur cage is _significantly wider_
and my ebike chains are narrower and seem to fit on the gears
so i guess my question at this point is whether they put on the wrong chain or they swapped out the front derailleur and it's not quite compatible
but i think they did one of the two and it does kind of explain a lot
i guess for the moment i put the front derailleur up way too high again and try to get more gear range out of it than they did, i kind of had that going in a limited way before i took the chain off to clean and reset everything
hopefully I can get there again but it is fiddly as fuck
but having a reason makes it better
and by thick i mean wide
it's the same width as the 3-speed chain on that Schwinn I need to get back to fixing up, which naturally has no front derailleur
or i dunno
maybe the front derailleur is just bent but i can tell you this
the chain literally scrapes both sides at once if you put the front derailleur at the right height
well that took a while to figure out
but
i think the reason i absolutely cannot get this chain to behave in this front derailleur if i try to set it up the correct way is that
it's the wrong fucking chain
it's too wide, it literally _cannot_ work with this derailleur without chain scrape in third gear if you try to set it up the way you're supposed to
when i started poking at it, the front derailleur was mounted super high on the post and they'd given up on the third front gear and settled for the lower two, and looking at the shifter cable i thought it was because they'd broken it and patched around that but
i think this whole time they were working around this stupid thicker chain
If you'd asked me 18 months ago if I could do a 15 mile (25km) bike ride, I'd have laughed and said I couldn't ride a bike for 15 metres.
Today I did a 15 mile bike ride round the East Neuk of Fife.
"Pfuä, ich seh überhaupt nix."
Hab mich, solange es so hart geblendet hatte, mit gesenktem Helm an der Asphaltkante orientiert. Hat funktioniert, bin auf der Straße geblieben :o)

I bought the valves and sealant a while back (bought the tape a year ago) and the tyres I tried to fit with tubes (replacing some awful tube only clinchers) and they drove me mad: turned out that fitting them without a tube was a doddle (although I used a tyre glider). Didn’t put enough sealant in the front and had to add a little more but the tires seated with only a track pump. Rear was perfect first time. Let’s see if there is still air in them tomorrow, but they seem pretty good so far. I’m sure I’ll be cursing my decision at some point but right now it seems plain sailing.
