Il presidente americano ha spiegato fi "non essere ancora pronto a raggiungere un accordo per porre fine alla guerra con l'Iran", nonostante la disponibilità del Paese a farlo. Nella lunga intervista telefonica di quasi 30 minuti con la Nbc News, il presidente Usa ha anche affermato di star lavorando con altri Paesi a un piano per mettere in sicurezza lo Stretto di Hormuz a fronte dell'impennata dei prezzi globali del petrolio, e ha minimizzato le preoccupazioni degli americani riguardo all'aumento dei prezzi della benzina da quando Stati Uniti e Israele hanno lanciato la loro operazione militare congiunta due settimane fa.
Dubbi sulla guida suprema iraniana e nuovi attacchi
Trump ha anche messo in dubbio che la nuova guida suprema dell'Iran sia "ancora viva" e ha affermato di essere "sorpreso" che l'Iran abbia deciso di attaccare altri paesi mediorientali in risposta all'operazione congiunta Usa-Israele, e che gli attacchi statunitensi sull'isola di Kharg di sabato abbiano "completamente distrutto" gran parte dell'isola, ma che "potremmo colpirla ancora un paio di volte, tanto per divertimento".
Le condizioni per un possibile accordo
Quando gli è stato chiesto quali sarebbero stati i termini di un potenziale accordo per porre fine alla guerra, il presidente ha risposto: "Non voglio dirvelo". Ha però ammesso che l'impegno da parte dell'Iran ad abbandonare completamente qualsiasi ambizione nucleare ne sarebbe stato parte integrante.
Operazioni nello Stretto di Hormuz
Durante l'intervista Trump ha inoltre affermato che non è chiaro se l'Iran abbia sganciato mine nello stretto. "Intendiamo effettuare operazioni di bonifica dello stretto con grande determinazione e crediamo che altri paesi, che incontrano qualche difficoltà, e in alcuni casi sono addirittura impossibilitati, ad accedere al petrolio, si uniranno a noi", ha aggiunto.
Il presidente ha glissato quando gli è stato chiesto se la Marina statunitense avrebbe iniziato a scortare le navi attraverso lo stretto, dicendo: "Non voglio dirvi nulla al riguardo", ma aggiungendo che "è possibile".
