L'Unità: Scommette su Polymarket sulla cattura di Maduro in Venezuela, militare Usa vince 400mila dollari ma viene arrestato
Oltra la “semplice” operazione militare che ha portato gli Stati Uniti alla cattura/rapimento di Nicolás Maduro, il presidente e autocrate alla guida del Venezuela arrestato lo scorso 3 gennaio a Caracas dalle forze speciali americane e poi trasferito negli Stati Uniti assieme alla moglie per essere sottoposto a processo.
L’assalto compiuto su ordine di Donald Trump per catturare Maduro è stato anche una clamorosa operazione finanziaria per una persona a conoscenza dell’operazione.
Si tratta del sergente maggiore Gannon Ken Van Dyke, 38enne veterano di stanza a Fort Bragg, che grazie all’accesso privilegiato ad informazioni top secret sull’operazione per la cattura di Maduro ha deciso di “monetizzare” l’arresto del presidente venezuelano.
Come? Utilizzando Polymarket, a controversa “piattaforma predittiva” che di fatto funziona come centro scommesse legato a praticamente ogni aspetto della contemporaneità, dal meteo allo sport fino alle geopolitica.
Van Dyke, secondo quanto scrive il New York Times basandosi sugli atti di accusa depositati a Manhattan, dove si terrà il processo contro il sergente maggiore dell’esercito, avrebbe piazzato 13 scommesse su Polymarket puntando con precisione sui tempi e gli esiti della missione poco prima del via libera della Casa Bianca alla cattura di Maduro: una scommessa a colpo sicuro che gli ha consentito di intascare poco più di 400mila dollari.
A incastrare Van Dyke è stata la stessa Polymarket, che ha segnalato il flusso anomalo di “scommesse” al dipartimento di Giustizia statunitense. Il sergente maggiore rischia ora una condanna fino a 50 anni di reclusione per frode e uso illegale di informazioni governative.
“Purtroppo il mondo intero è diventato una specie di casinò… in Europa e ovunque, si fanno questo genere di scommesse”, è stato il commento ai giornalisti il presidente degli Stati Uniti Donald Trump.
Proprio personaggi vicini all’amministrazione Trump sono “sospettati” di aver sfruttato nel recente passato informazioni riservate per effettuare operazioni su Polymarket e Kalshi, altra nota piattaforma “predittiva”, in particolare sullo scoppio della guerra in Iran e sulla fluttuazione nei prezzi del petrolio a seguito degli annunci di Trump sui cessate il fuoco nel Golfo.

Beyond the “simple” military operation that led the United States to the capture/kidnapping of Nicolás Maduro, the president and autocrat at the helm of Venezuela arrested on January 3rd in Caracas by American special forces and subsequently transferred to the United States along with his wife to face trial, there was also a sensational financial operation involving a person aware of the operation.
This was Sergeant Major Gannon Ken Van Dyke, a 38-year-old veteran stationed at Fort Bragg, who, thanks to privileged access to top-secret information about the operation to capture Maduro, decided to “monetize” the arrest of the Venezuelan president.
How? By using Polymarket, a controversial “predictive platform” that essentially functions as a betting center linked to virtually every aspect of contemporary life, from weather to sports to geopolitics.
According to the New York Times, based on the charges filed in Manhattan where the sergeant major of the army will stand trial, Van Dyke placed 13 bets on Polymarket, accurately predicting the timing and outcomes of the mission just before the White House gave the go-ahead for Maduro’s capture – a sure thing that allowed him to pocket just over $400,000.
Polymarket itself implicated Van Dyke, reporting the abnormal flow of “bets” to the U.S. Department of Justice. The sergeant major now faces a sentence of up to 50 years in prison for fraud and the illegal use of government information.
“Unfortunately, the whole world has become a kind of casino… in Europe and everywhere, these types of bets are made,” President of the United States Donald Trump commented to journalists.
It was even individuals close to the Trump administration who are “suspected” of having exploited confidential information in the recent past to make operations on Polymarket and Kalshi, another well-known “predictive” platform, particularly on the outbreak of the war in Iran and the fluctuations in oil prices following Trump’s announcements of ceasefires in the Gulf.

Donald Trump è deciso a farla pagare ai Paesi dell’Ue che, in questi mesi, hanno rifiutato di concedere l’uso delle proprie basi per condurre attacchi contro l’Iran. L’indiscrezione arriva da Reuters, che ha preso visione di un’email interna del Pentagono nella quale vengono ipotizzate una serie di misure che gli Stati Uniti potrebbero intraprendere nei confronti dei loro alleati Nato più riluttanti.
A rischiare di più è senza dubbio la Spagna. Il Paese iberico, citato nel documento, è accusato sia di non aver concesso l’uso delle basi, sia di aver più volte denunciato che il conflitto contro l’Iran è illegale in quanto “contrario al diritto internazionale”. Ma nel mirino finisce anche il Regno Unito del primo ministro Keir Starmer che, sempre secondo il documento, potrebbe spingere la Casa Bianca a valutare una revisione della posizione statunitense sulla rivendicazione britannica delle Isole Falkland, da tempo oggetto di disputa con l’Argentina.
Scartata, almeno per il momento e sempre secondo quanto riportato da Reuters, l’ipotesi, più volte ventilata da Trump, di un ritiro degli Stati Uniti dalla NATO, così come quella di una possibile chiusura delle basi americane in Europa.

Di fronte a queste indiscrezioni, il premier spagnolo Pedro Sánchez si è detto sorpreso. Ha quindi precisato che il governo di Madrid, nelle proprie scelte, “non si basa su email”, ma su “documenti ufficiali e posizioni governative, in questo caso degli Stati Uniti”. Quel che è certo, ha aggiunto, è che nemmeno queste ulteriori pressioni convinceranno il Paese a cambiare linea.
Anzi, ha ribadito che il divieto all’uso delle basi militari, in particolare quella navale di Rota e quella aerea di Morón, in Andalusia, resterà in vigore. Continuerà inoltre a essere negato anche l’uso dello spazio aereo ai mezzi impegnati nell’operazione degli Stati Uniti e di Israele contro il regime degli ayatollah.

Fragile, ripetutamente violato dalle parti in queste settimane, scenario in cui Israele sta di fatto preparando una nuova occupazione, eppure esteso nuovamente.
Il cessate il fuoco tra Libano ed Israele , che sarebbe dovuto scadere domenica 26 aprile, è stato esteso per ulteriori tre settimane. L’annuncio è arrivato dal presidente degli Stati Uniti Donald Trump giovedì sera, dopo un incontro a Washington con gli ambasciatori dei rispettivi Paesi e in cui ha annunciato che nelle prossime settimane incontrerà alla Casa Bianca il primo ministro israeliano Benjamin Netanyahu e il presidente libanese Joseph Aoun. Sarebbe un evento di rilevanza quasi storica: prima di questi colloqui i due Paesi non avevano rapporti diplomatici diretti formali da decenni.
La tregua in Libano è stata sempre legata a quella in Iran per la presenza nel “Paese dei cedri” di Hezbollah, il partito-milizia sciita stretto alleato della Repubblica Islamica. Durante la tregua in atto non si sono fermati gli attacchi proprio tra Hezbollah e l’IDF, le forze di difesa israeliane, nel sud del Libano.
Area che è il centro di un futuro accordo tra Israele e Libano: il governo di Beirut, stretto nella non facile situazione di dover contenere al suo interno Hezbollah senza far passare l’eventuale intesa con Israele coma una “resa”, vuole che l’IDF si ritiri dall’area parzialmente occupata da Israele a sud del fiume Litani, mentre il governo Netanyahu spinto dall’estrema destra religiosa punta al contrario ad occupare l’area come “zona cuscinetto” per proteggere i residenti nel nord di Israele.
Il tutto mentre i due Paesi continuano ad accusarsi reciprocamente di violare il cessate il fuoco appena “rinnovato”. L’esercito israeliano ha comunicato stamattina di aver intercettato degli attacchi lanciati dal Libano nella zona di Shtula, vicino alla linea di demarcazione tra i due Paesi, e di aver ucciso tre persone che ha identificato come membri di Hezbollah. Il gruppo filo-iraniano ha confermato di aver lanciato dei razzi, sostenendo però fosse una ritorsione per altri attacchi di Israele.

The announcement came from US President Donald Trump on Thursday evening, after a meeting in Washington with the ambassadors of the respective countries, and in which he announced that in the coming weeks he would meet at the White House with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. It would be a meeting of almost historical significance: before these talks, the two countries had no formal direct diplomatic relations for decades.
The truce in Lebanon has always been linked to one in Iran regarding the presence in the “Cedar Country” of Hezbollah, the Shia party-militia close ally of the Islamic Republic. During the current truce, attacks have not stopped between Hezbollah and the IDF, the Israeli Defense Forces, in southern Lebanon.

All this while the two countries continue to accuse each other of violating the just “renewed” ceasefire. The Israeli military announced this morning that it had intercepted attacks launched from Lebanon in the Shtula area, near the demarcation line between the two countries, and that it had killed three people it identified as members of Hezbollah. The Iranian-backed group confirmed that it had launched rockets, however, claiming it was a retaliation for other attacks by Israel.
