"You may, at this point, notice that you’re reading a #Jewish newspaper, that I’m a Jewish journalist, and that #oysters are not #kosher.

But what if I told you oysters were, in fact, kosher? That a #rabbi once argued they are actually vegetables, by virtue of the fact that they “root” on rocks in the ocean? And that their shells are a form of scales, thus making them part of the kosher category of scaled and finned #fish?

These are real arguments that were made around the turn of the 20th century by Rabbi #IsaacMayerWise, the founder of #HebrewUnionCollege in #Cincinnati, the first #American institution for #Reform Jewish ordination.

The impetus for this #Talmudic bit of logic was in large part a now-infamous feast that has come to be known as the “#TrefaBanquet,” due to the amount of non-kosher food that was served."

If mollusks are kosher, the world can be your oyster

At the turn of the 20th century, rabbis argued that bivalves were OK to eat — which is good news for a Jewish oyster shucker like me

Shalom, friends!
I did not expect the #talmudic tractate about meal offerings to feature so many deep, heart to heart existential convos between God and God’s besties, but here we are!
First with Moses and now with Abraham.

"Since the founding of #Israel in 1948 — and until 2024 — there hadn’t been a major non-#religious #Hebrew #publishing house outside of the country. (There are thriving Hebrew presses for the #Haredi community in the #US and in #Europe, publishing everything from #biblical and #Talmudic commentaries to #children’s #books.)

This wasn’t always the case.

#ModernHebrew has roots in 19th-century Europe, where #Russian-born #lexicographer #EliezerBenYehuda lived and worked before joining the First #Aliyah in 1881.

There were flourishing presses in the language, including the original #SchockenBooks, founded in #Berlin in 1931 and boasting #authors like future Nobel Laureate #SYAgnon. #Hitler’s rise and the #Holocaust, underscored by #book burnings on the streets, put an end to the industry on the continent."

"Israeli diaspora" in the diaspora is a concept I need some time to wrap my head around. 🤔

For the first time since Hitler, a Hebrew publisher sets up shop in Germany

Altneuland Press has a bold vision for Hebrew: returning it to the status of a global language and literature.

"A resurgence of #medieval anti-#Talmud propaganda is spreading rapidly across #conservative #socialmedia, according to scholars and #Jewish educators tracking #online #antisemitism. Influencers with millions of followers are amplifying accusations that Jewish #religious texts endorse immoral or criminal behavior, claims #historians say were fabricated centuries ago and repeatedly disproven.

Among the most visible examples, political commentator #CandaceOwens recently cited The #Talmudic #Jew, a 1871 #German pamphlet authored by #AugustRohling."

Shalom, friends! We’ve hit the final page of Tractate #Zevachim, so I’m throwing it back—way back—for an epic #Talmudic debate between Reish Lakish and Rabbi Yochanan about the Flood (and… global warming?)

"As the #Bible’s fourth chapter tells it, “and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that #Cain rose up against #Abel his brother, and slew him.”

Fascinatingly, #Judaism’s ancient #rabbis understood what happened before the #fratricide—that oh-so-brief interaction in the field—as conversational combat before the tragic tussle. It was the first recorded history of someone deciding that an opinion he or she disagreed with made the person not worthy of existing—mankind’s first recorded cancellation. The rabbis suggested the brothers had a debate that led to a life destroyed.

What did they fight about? In classic #Talmudic fashion, it’s a debate."

Joseph’s Antidote to Cain the Cancellor

Joseph’s magnanimity is exactly the reminder we need in our time of rampant moral grandstanding and eager denunciations.

Shalom friends!
You know that Aesop’s Fable where the moral of the story is it’s better to live a simple life as a field mouse than one in a city there’s lots of food but also lots of danger, stress, and gentrification? Well that fable got an unexpected #Talmudic… squeakquel.

I really enjoy the #etymology-website, BaLashon! It investigates #Hebrew - (#Biblical, #Talmudic, Medieval and Modern) and connections to languages like #Aramaic, #Arabic, #Akkadian and #Yiddish; also, how #Greek, #Latin and #English have entered Hebrew, and how Hebrew has affected those languages.

The most recent article is on the possible roots of the word #tallit ~ you can read it here: https://www.balashon.com/2024/06/tallit.html
