Voted #prosody by @prosodyim. Make sure to stay with the default backend, i.e. filestore, because it's stable and battle-tested.

I assume, that #ejabbberd by @ejabberd can also work with 4 GiB RAM. In that case, I recommend the PostgreSQL backend, not Mnesia.

Never tried to run a Matrix server. I only use it from #Jabber via the #slidge gateway.

Yes, #Jabber/#XMPP does that, too. You can have bridges to Signal, Whatsapp, Telegram and many other silos. Just like Matrix. In both cases, you need an account on the respective walled garden to use it. I.e. you still need to sacrifice a phone number and maybe a goat.

Ich benutze #Jabber seit 2008. Enfangs mit ejabberd, seit einiger Zeit aber mit prosody, weil man damit eher einen Transport zu zB Whatsapp hinbekommen hat.
Ich habe seit Sommer auch #slidge und bin recht begeistert: WA, Signal, Matrix und Telegram laufen im XMPP mit.
