Lebanese Journalist Amal Khalil Killed in Israeli Strike, Medics Blocked from Saving Her Under Rubble

Israeli forces killed the prominent Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil on Wednesday despite a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. Khalil and her colleague, photographer Zeinab Faraj, were reporting from southern Lebanon when an Israeli drone struck a car near them, killing two civilians. Khalil and Faraj sought shelter in a nearby building, but then Israel struck that building, as well. Emergency and medical workers rescued Faraj but came under fire before they could rescue Khalil, and were prevented by the Israeli military from returning for over six hours. Khalil died by the time her body was recovered from under the rubble. The deliberate obstruction is “a war crime and requires an international investigation,” says Sara Qudah, Middle East and North Africa regional director at the Committee to Protect Journalists. Amal Khalil is the ninth journalist killed by Israel in Lebanon this year. She told local media in 2024 that she had received a death threat from Israel’s Mossad spy agency warning her to leave southern Lebanon or risk decapitation. “This is what Israel is trying to do. It’s trying to prevent the truth from being reached by a much, much wider audience to see the war crimes that are being carried out [in Lebanon] on a daily basis,” says Steve Sweeney, Lebanon bureau chief for the Russian news channel RT, who survived an Israeli strike last month.

Israeli airstrike kills Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil

Rescue workers say a Lebanese journalist was killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon. The daily Al-Akhbar newspaper says its reporter Amal Khalil was killed on Wednesday in the southern village of al-Tiri. Khalil had been covering the Israel-Hezbollah war, which resumed in early March, in the shadow of the U.S.-Israeli war in Iran. Earlier on Wednesday, Reporters Without Borders had called on the international community to pressure the Israeli army to allow the rescue of Khalil and others who were in the house. However, rescuers say her body was only retrieved hours later from the rubble.

Today's protest in Groningen. This happens on the Waagstraat between 13:00 and 14:00, every other Saturday (odd / oneven week numbers).
It's a quiet demo, not a noisy demo like at the railway station.
If you want to join in you just need to turn up. There are lots of signs that you can borrow if you want to hold one.
Everyone is friendly.
I know that many people feel unable to do anything about the awful situation in Palestine. Protesting and refusing Israeli products are two of the best things that individuals can do.

Israel has announced the expansion of its so-called buffer zone and issued mass evacuation orders as its military destroys homes and infrastructure throughout the region. A humanitarian crisis is brewing as hospitals have been blocked from receiving medical supplies and as healthcare workers, as well as other civilians, have been killed in targeted Israeli strikes. “This is a war again that’s been ongoing since October 2023, and over the past two-and-a-half years we’ve documented repeated, apparently deliberate, attacks on civilians,” says Human Right Watch researcher Ramzi Kaiss, speaking from Beirut. “But what’s different this time around is that there’s a new brazenness in the statements issued by the Israeli military, where they are simply stating that they intend to commit more war crimes … perhaps a reflection of the state of impunity for any violations that have been committed in Lebanon, as in Gaza.”
