The horror of middle school boys and a jaunty romp about murder in the Old West.

The Plague

I’m sure no one would call this movie a fun watch, but it was incredibly rough as a middle school teacher to watch and recognize the bullying and shaming that happens in this movie. I seriously considered walking out, and I never walk out of movies.

I don’t mean that this is a poorly made film. It’s very well made, and the performances all feel real- but more than a little PTSD triggering for me.

Destry Rides Again

Jimmy Stewart at his Jimmy Stewartest. A very enjoyable ride. Also: I’d never seen this before, so I had no idea how much Madeline Kahn in Blazing Saddles was channeling Marlene Dietrich’s Frenchy. Mel Brooks got some very delayed laughter out of me.

VIOLENCE VS SEX

This morning I am reflecting on how Hollywood's most popular films, its biggest money makers (superhero films, Transformers, etc.) generally involve mass genocides (and certainly mass death) about which the films and the companies that make them are largely unconcerned. The mass death, in fact, is the point. Come see spectacular mass death on a grand imaginary scale! (In some cases such films are made in cooperation with the US military "for authenticity".)

However, Hollywood could never make a film showing actual real sex between two people or certain parts of the human body in such a film for that would lead to censorship of the highest order and the film's suppression.

When did we become so casual about mass death and so censorious about human nudity and sexual expression?
