Lilbits: iPad-style multitasking on iPhones, and maybe Lenovo didn’t leak any Android PC plans after all

Last week news started to make the rounds that Lenovo has published a web page spelling out the pros (and many cons) of PCs running Android. But Lenovo has since removed that website and claimed that it had nothing to do with Google’s plans to bring Android to PCs in the future… although it’s unclear why Lenovo published that page in the first place.

In other recent tech news from around the […]

Transferred my wife from iPhone SE 2nd gen (2020) to iPhone SE 3rd gen (2022), mainly due to storage (128GB vs 256GB) but promoted right now due to the former reporting liquid in the Lightning port. (There was no liquid in the Lightning port or on the cable.) Cleaned the port pretty well but it won't stop reporting same.

Anyway, A15 and better battery over A13. Should get a few years out of it.

(She hates phones as large as the base iPhones today.)

I get the thinking behind #Apple switching to annualised numbering for its OS releases. It’s a good idea. Here’s my hot take: They should also rename #iOS back to #iPhoneOS when they do it. Every. Other. OS. In their lineup. Is [device]OS iOS was called that because it was for iPad & iPod as well

They should also rename #iOS back to #iPhoneOS when they do it.

Every. Other. OS. In their lineup. Is [device]OS

iOS was called that because it was for iPad & iPod as well.

Now that #iPadOS is separate and iPods don’t exist as part of the ecosystem (no iPod touch is supported), iOS is literally just on iPhone. It should be called iPhoneOS.

@mysk For now the explanation that #Apple is weary about the security implications of #PWA running in other browsers on #iPhoneOS makes perfect sense to me.
It will need quite some changes to have non-native PWA run in similar ways to native ones with the same level of control on behaviour and access to advanced features.
And if they are second class compared to Safari, the EU will not be happy.
I consider this an unintended consequence of the EU ruling and the #openLetter baseless.

#iOS

Because of all the fuss about #visionOS apps I stumbled across the screenshots of my first #iOS (or #iPhoneOS as it was called back then) published on the #AppStore: Plazes (a startup I was working for which was acquired by Nokia).

This was all built with iPhoneOS 2.0. E.g. there was no MapKit, so the map in one screenshot is a static image from Google Maps.

The screenshots are from 2008 taken on an 1st gen iPhone.

Very @OldSchoolUI 😉

Project of the day (day 2) 2023, Thursday, August 24th

#WacOS : https://github.com/seanpm2001/WacOS

WacOS is an operating system project that aims to allow the look, feel, and functionality of all #Apple operating systems and bundled software (including, but not limited to: System 1-6, Classic #MacOS, Mac OS X, OS X, MacOS (modern), #iPhoneOS, #iOS, #iPadOS, #NewtonOS, S.O.S, GS/OS, #tvOS, #NeXTSTEP, #watchOS, #Siri, #MacPaint, #MacWrite, etc.) in an open-source, and unrestricted way.

WacOS is also a dual-kernel operating system, which utilizes both the #Linux Kernel and the #Darwin Kernel.

It is a major project, with over a hundred repositories, but it isn't functional yet. It is also my second most popular project (as of 2023, Thursday, August 24th) with 41 stars. It is a major endeavor, and needs some love. It is written in over 50 different programming languages, due to its complexity and its scale. Anyone who is interested can start a discussion, raise an issue, or send a pull request.
