@kolev @daniel I love #XMPP but not having a single cross-platform fully-featured client makes onboarding normies much more difficult, hindering adoption greatly.

Nothing wrong with being the #Ubuntu or #LinuxMint of decentralised #FOSS messengers... people who need the Archlinuxes and BSDs will find them in time.

I have managed to onboard lots of people to cross-platform messengers like #DeltaChat, #ElementMessenger and #SignalApp, but not a single person to XMPP. Cross platform apps also make switching OSes eaiser, e.g. migrating from Windows to Linux, or Android to LinuxMobile.

@dos @ati1 @linmob That automatic switching from speaker to handset is only for the Calls app, right?

I was referring to #e2ee voice calls on #SignalDesktop, #ElementMessenger, #DinoIM and #DeltaChat. I did try #PureOS Crimson alpha a few days ago but forgot to test this, so would definitely be interested if there's any news regarding this : )

@ati1 @linmob Depends what the user wants from a personal device, how they use it and what their priorities are. If someone's priorities are a modern camera, running proprietary Android apps and their money is held hostage by banks requiring #Duopoly apps, they should check back later, perhaps when the Librem 5 "Fir" model is released.

On the other hand, if #FreeSoftware, #privacy, #modularity, #repairability, #ecofriendliness, #decentralisation, #digitalindependence, etc. are valued above other things, the Librem 5 and the higher-spec model, the #LibertyPhone, can absolutely work in 2025 and beyond.

I am daily driving a #Librem5 with #postmarketOS and everything important to me works: VoLTE calls and SMS (although I avoid them due to #SaltTyphoon), 4G data, Wi-Fi, camera with OK quality photos (see: #ShotOnLibrem5), GPS with #PureMaps, web browsing with #FirefoxESR, web apps (including banking) using #GNOMEWeb and #BraveBrowser, email using #Geary and #DeltaChat, audio calls on #SignalMessenger, #Matrix ( #ElementMessenger), #XMPP ( #DinoIM), #JitsiMeet, etc.

There are occasional bugs and quirks, and the device itself has limitations but nothing that I can't work around.

Not sure if I missed anything. Let me know if you have a specific use case that you absolutely require and I'll see if I can test...

@avoca @Ketakater I also got all of my family and a lot of my wider circle on it using these two strategies:

1. Getting a device that simply does not have #Whatsapp / proprietary messaging apps, i.e.: #Linuxmobile: #Flx1, #LibertyPhone, #Librem5, #Jolla2c, etc. People typically won't care enough about #privacy but they will understand if WA simply does not work on your phone.

2. Kids: They don't have phone numbers (or phones in many cases) but want to be included in family group chats. Once kids got in on it, #DeltaChat spread like wildfire among our extended family, relatives, inlaws and friends. Even a kid with #downsyndrome onboarded their grandpa in seconds while I had earlier struggled to get him on #Signal!

A great thing about Delta Chat is that, unlike #ElementMessenger and other fully-featured #Matrix clients, there's no search and discovery feature so kids do not stumble upon untrusted groups and strangers' profiles.

🧵 > Anyone can build an application on top of Matrix or host their own Matrix server. Its original creators provide the Element Messenger and said on October 24 that they have been the first to build on the “emerging” specification.

#ElementMessenger #MatrixServer

Wouldn’t it be cool if #ElementMessenger could use the iOS focus filter on the spaces

@Janina: I host my own matrix server so can see what is and isn't encrypted or visible to the server. This is misleading at the very least. Signal requires a phone number as your contact info, then gets your ip as well. Matrix does not require a phone or email and neither are available to the server.

I am not one to say that #matrix #elementmessenger is perfect but this write up is not correct. You can verify users to protect against that mitm and take your own crypto with matrix
