Mary Gauthier, Mercy Now, 2005 on Lost Highway

I've been a fan of Mary Gauthier since my wife heard her play in Provincetown in the winter of 1999 - she's just a fantastic songwriter and compelling performer. This was her fourth full-length, with the title track as well as "I Drink" (later covered by others including Blake Shelton). My copy—via Mystery Train Records in Gloucester MA—is a 180g vinyl pressing with inner liner.

It’s going to take me a while to get through it in its entirety, but when you’re as much of a disciple of Patti as I am, it’s an endeavour you’re willing to partake in.

This sprawling 11 disc set documents live performances by Patti spread out over five years; NYC, Washington D.C., Philadelphia and Oregon.

Tonight, I’m starting with the first two discs, which is ONE show from the Bottom Line in NYC, two days after Christmas in 1975.

Just a crazy snapshot of a wild five year window from one of the most important artists of all time.

As a neat little bow to wrap up our convo about microtonal music…

I’ve been very vocal on here about how I feel about this band, how overhyped they’ve been, particularly up here in Canada where I live.
I find the talent to hype ratio incredibly skewed, & I hate the whole paper mache’ kabuki alien vaudeville thing.

My 17 year old son however… WHOLEHEARTEDLY disagrees. He enjoys them immensely, & when I took him down to our local shop, and he approached me with both of these 6-song E.P.s under his arm, it became clear I had to get them for him.

Besides, it was his birthday a few days ago, so I’ll just consider it one more birthday gift for him.
He deserves it.

The deal I made with him in exchange for me footing the bill was that he had to listen to Harry Partch immediately after.
He agreed.
