Sarah Vaughan, Sarah Vaughan Sings George Gershwin, 1958 on Mercury
Fantastic collection of Sarah Vaughan doing Gershwin standards from the twenties and thirties, supported by Hal Mooney & His Orchestra.
My copy—via a private sale—is a 2xLP gatefold reissue in mono by Verve/UMe, which reproduces the old Mercury labels.

TRANS AM
Liberation
2004 U.S. pressing
THE greatest thing to ever come out of Bethesda, Maryland, with Goldie Hawn, Connie Chung & Julia Louis-Dreyfus all VERY DISTANT runners-up.
My love for Trans Am is well documented. They are just fucking incredible, & I love each & every one of their records, all for different reasons.
Liberation is so good; it’s got the signature blend of scorching rockers, as well as the synthy/electronic pieces, & contains two of my all time favorite Trans Am songs in “Music For Dogs” and “Idea Machine”.
Trans Am genre-hop more than a lot of other bands I can think of; also dabbling in metal, folk, and krautrock in the past, as well as the aforementioned rock burners electro experiments.
One more thing I’d like to say about Trans Am, because nobody EVER mentions him.
Drummer Sebastian Thomson is one of the great, unheralded batshit monster drummers of the past 30years.

VIOLENT FEMMES
Hallowed Ground
2024 U.S. Ltd. Edition reissue
Orange Smoke #vinyl
40th Anniversary
Unequivocally the greatest record The Violent Femmes ever made, and I don’t think it’s particularly close.
It’s such an incredibly dark and fucked up record in comparison to their debut, trading catchy #folk #punk for #avantgarde and #gothic sounding #americana .
All of its ingredients; the #country , #goth and twisted religious underbelly makes for quite the unsettling musical experience.
In the BEST way possible.
For my money, there is no murder ballad in the history of popular music that is more wonderfully demented than “Country Death Song”.
Maybe Ween’s “Buenos Tardes Amigo”, but that one is way more tongue in cheek.
A near perfect fraying of the senses, this record.

ANDY WHITE
Rave On Andy White
1986 Germany pressing
A bit of a Friday “power of suggestion” post.
I think it was @ironmanrecords who posted this not too long ago, and I was very pleased to see it. It reminded me that it’d been a while since I heard it.
If you’re unfamiliar with Andy White, he is an incredibly talented Northern Irish poet, author and singer/songwriter who wields a familiar and comforting brand of #folk -y rock.
Rave On was his very first full-length, and since then, has put out a SLEW of exceptional records.
He’s worked with TONS of notable artists and musicians over the years, including Peter Gabriel, so that should give you a clue as to how well respected he is.
Melodic and understated acoustic storytelling of the highest quality. His voice is never overpowering or theatrical, just gentle and conversational, like he’s telling you and you alone a story directly.

TORTOISE
Touch
2025 U.S. pressing
Great way to get my Friday going, & one of my absolute favorite records of last year.
To me, it’s always astonishing when a band makes what very well may be one of their best records so deep into their career.
Tortoise has been at it so long, and for my own personal tastes, I haven’t been much of a fan of what they’ve been doing their last few records.
To me, Touch is right next to the albums that made me fall in love with them in the beginning. Records like Millions Now Living Will Never Die, the self-titled, and TNT.
There’s a sense of cinematic adventure here, and for me, interstellar miles more engaging than their last record The Catastrophist. The members of Tortoise live in three different U.S. cities now, which changed their process of developing songs.
More of whatever that process is, please.
Worth every bit of your time.
Wonderful record.
