GLENN BRANCA
The Ascension
2014 U.S. reissue

Continuing with the odd and unusual tonight.

A very loud and noisy experiment in resonance, and one of the greatest #experimental #artrock albums of all time.

The album is a study in alternate guitar tunings, and the resonances that are generated by those tunings by MULTIPLE guitars.

It was universally acclaimed by just about everybody in 1981, but that didn’t help sell any records or get Glenn signed by anyone that could help the album penetrate the mainframe.

Four guitarists, one bass player, one drummer, one of those guitarists being Lee Renaldo, who would later go on to join Sonic Youth.

Repeated harmonics, overtones from excessive feedback, and dense sonic landscapes that do a very good job of putting across what (supposedly) his live shows were like.
Loud and powerful.

And a great sounding reissue by Superior Viaduct.

CHRYSTABELL AND DAVID LYNCH
Cellophane Memories
2024 U.S. Lt. Edition pressing
Clear vinyl

Thursday night mood for sure.

David Lynch’s final musical excursion before his death, with some synth work by Angelo Badalamenti.

You can file this under dreamy, #ambient and #experimental dream-pop, driven completely by mood and its hypnotic pacing. Not at all a traditional pop album actually, but more of a sonic art piece.

Which is per David Lynch’s usual wont.

One of those kind of records that’s good to throw on whilst doing other artistic endeavors.

Greta Van Fleet - 'The Battle At Garden's Gate'. ⚔️🏰 🎸⚡💿 (16 April 2021)
‎ ‎ ‎
Even now, their second EP, 'From The Fires', is probably what most people know them for, but I would say their second studio album, 'The Battle At Garden’s Gate', is their best work so far. It just feels bigger in every way, from the overall concept to the soundscape, even if it does get a bit self-indulgent here and there, especially given it runs just over an hour. I think part of what makes it land so well is how ambitious it is without completely losing its grip. The album leans heavily into that classic rock DNA (as expected), with bits of prog and even a touch of folk here and there, but still manages to sound like its own thing rather than just a throwback. As always, there is no denying where their influences come from. With this album, they have definitely managed to take those influences and shape them into something that genuinely sounds like their own. The production is noticeably richer too, more layered and more cinematic, giving tracks like “Heat Above” and “Age of Machine” a proper sense of scale (the latter always gives me the chills, in a good way). As always, the musicianship is spot on throughout, and the guitar work is far more textured than on their earlier releases, not just riffs but proper atmosphere, and the rhythm section gives everything a solid backbone without ever feeling overworked. Furthermore, I also feel there there was a clear effort to make the album feel cohesive, with themes and motifs that carry across the runtime, which makes it more rewarding if you sit down and listen front to back. All in all, it is a fantastic album in my book and one that shows real growth from the band. Definitely worth a listen!

43 years ago today, April 16, 1983, The Statler Brothers debuted at #67 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart with “Oh Baby Mine”. It went on to peak at #2 and spent a total of 19 weeks on the chart.

It’s been my hobby to collect 45 RPM singles. I especially liked hearing this catchy tune on the radio. I went to my favorite music store and bought this record 4+ decades ago.

Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd, Jazz Samba, 1962 on Verve

Early work in the bossa nova trend in the US, recorded at Pierce Hall, All Souls Unitarian Church in DC and released two years before Getz/Gilberto. Includes “Desafinado” (which was also on Getz/Gilberto) and “Samba de Uma Nota” composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim.

My copy—via a private sale—is the 2023 Acoustic Sounds Series reissue on Verve by UMG / UMe, which is a fantastic pressing.

MARTIN MULL
Sex And Violins
1978 U.S. pressing

A deeply sentimental favorite.

I was in desperate need of a few laughs today, so this was a no brainer, seeing that it has never once failed to make me smile or laugh.

Not only is this shit FUNNY, but there’s great songcraft going on here, with some vibes that are reminiscent of Randy Newman and early Tom Waits.

Martin Mull was a comedic genius, a great actor, and criminally underrated.

His Johnny Carson appearances were fucking GREAT, and everything Martin was in was made better for having him in it.

It was a sad day for me when he died.

37 years ago today, April 15, 1989, Lorrie Morgan debuted at #67 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart with “Dear Me”. It went on to peak at #9 and spent a total of 22 weeks on the chart.

After ten+ years in the business, this was her very first Top 10 hit! I played this song a lot. It was in high rotation at AM 650 KYAK, the station I worked for (1987-1991) and had listened to since childhood.

37 years ago today, April 15, 1989, Kathy Mattea debuted at #60 *Hot Shot Debut* on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart with “Come from the Heart”. It went on to peak at #1 and spent a total of 20 weeks on the chart.

We played this great, up-tempo song a lot back then. It was in our hot rotation for several weeks at AM 650 KYAK, the station I worked for (1987-1991) and had listened to since childhood.
