Milt Jackson & John Coltrane, Bags & Trane, 1961 on Atlantic

Jackson and Coltrane are joined by Hank Jones (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Connie Kay (drums). Recording supervised by Nesuhi Ertegun, engineered by Tom Dowd.

Great LP, bringing together Milt Jackson (Bags) of The Modern Jazz Quartet and John Coltrane (Trane) who had a year earlier put out Giant Steps. I’m not always a fan of the vibraphone but love how it plays off of Coltrane on this album.

My copy—via a private sale—is the 2017 reissue by Rhino Vinyl, in mono, pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal GmbH. Sounds great.

Just a stray thought to piggyback off of my last Gram Parsons post.

I realize how many artists have covered “Love Hurts”, but the best version clearly belongs to Gram Parsons (and Emmylou).

The version on Grievous Angel has that stripped-down, aching country feel that really fits the lyrics of that song.

It’s far less polished than say…the Nazareth version, but way more intimate sounding.

Gram Parsons had a way of making heartbreak sound… almost noble.

GRAM PARSONS
Grievous Angel
1974 Canada pressing

Absolute perfection for a sunny Monday afternoon.

Released after Gram died and prominently featuring Emmylou Harris, it is the very definition of what “country rock” is. Or, as Gram liked to say, “Cosmic American Music”.

I have a weird memory attached to this album.
In the late 90s, we had a house party where about 75-80 people showed up.

A good friend of mine brought her cousin (a girl 2 years her junior) to the party, & warned me:

“My cousin is a VERY anxious & socially afraid person. She doesn’t really talk. So don’t be freaked out by her. She just RARELY talks. She just gets very anxious around people…”

End of the night, we’ve got a fire going & 30 of us are around it. I played “Grievous Angel” on the acoustic, & when I finished a little tiny voice said “I love Gram Parsons”.
It was my friends cousin.
First & only words she said all night.
😂

THE SPINANES
Strand
1996 U.S. pressing

Dragging through another Monday morning, and after a blind pull from the library, THIS gets first spin of the morning.

Although I don’t like this quite as much as their first effort Manos, there’s still a lot here to like.
Elliott Smith sings on two of these songs, and on whole, Strand is an album that leans heavily into making the studio itself an instrument; experimenting in THAT way more than live instrumentation and performance.
It’s a very dreamy, and gauzy sounding record.

Rebecca Gates has such a wonderful voice, and it continues to shine here.

After Manos, it’s almost like they made a conscious decision to not become part of the #90s music machine, which they could have easily done.
Instead, they just quietly made two really good records, another decent one, and that was it.

Start with Manos.
If you like that, then work your way to Strand.

SILENT RUNNING
Emotional Warfare
1984 U.S. pressing

Some infectious #newwave -y #1980s #alternative rock for a chill Sunday morning.

I found this in a used bin in Atlanta, Georgia about 6 months before COVIDpalooza broke out. I was there making a record, and I will fill the downtime by going to Braves games and sifting through a random record store down in The Battery.
I had never heard of it before, and since it was cheap, took a shot.

Despite what the one lone asshole on this album’s Discogs page had to say (who hurt you, dude?), it’s not without its merits.

MY pressing does NOT sound muddled or washy. It’s actually quite big and crisp on my system, even though it does fall victim to every #80s production trope (cannon shot snare drums, etc…).

But the songs are pretty good, particularly the title track. And if you like that 82-84 genre of big synthy rock and pop, you’ll probably dig it.

Bill Evans, At The Montreux Jazz Festival, 1968 on Verve

Second 1968 Bill Evans performance I’ve posted this week, this one has the trio (again with Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette) at Casino de Montreux in Switzerland, and was recorded by the technical department of Radio Suisse Romande.

My copy (via a private sale) is the 2020 Analogue Productions reissue on two 45rpm 200g records, cut by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab. Sounds fantastic, though I can’t say I like having to change the platter twice as often.
