1982 Netherlands 7” single

A pretty obscure but interesting artifact from the early minimal synth / post-punk underground.

Spera isn’t a one-hit novelty guy—he actually has a long, multidisciplinary career in not only music, but art and interior and decorative design.
He’s one of those dudes who was never mainstream, but was artistically active for decades.

Over time, he eventually moved away from the synthy song structures found on the three songs here, into more experimental and ambient sound art like tape loops, field recordings, and collage techniques.

As unique & as interesting as this single is, it’s probably the LEAST weird thing he ever did.
Definitely worth checking out if you like the #80s #synth / #postpunk crossover.

Can’t remember where I bought this, but it was probably around ‘07/‘08 while I was on tour.
Shocked that it’s 30-40 CAD now.

A glitchy, abstract, and thoroughly enjoyable electronic record from Finland’s Vladislav Delay.

Consisting of five different pieces (three of them clocking in at over 19 minutes), it’s got some wonderful #minimal & #ambient vibes, and the album on whole comes off more as a single, immersive environment than a traditional “album”.

The bass pulses are very deep and watery sounding, and it’s littered with really cool sounding textures of noise.

I would also say that any sense of percussion or rhythm is fully accidental, with noises and samples that kind of drift in and out.

If you pursue creative endeavors like drawing or painting, I think you may like this.
Or, maybe you just smoke a lot of weed at night?
If so, then this DEFINITELY is for you.

Been a minute for this one.

A fine gem of #80s #indie #alternative ; with shimmering melodic guitars, excellent songcraft, and really crisp, bright production.

The gem here is the opening track “Last Perfect Thing”, a wonderfully jangly #powerpop song. From there, it’s steady as she goes throughout. Really catchy, tight tunes front to back.

This was the second of the five records from the San Francisco band’s initial run (‘84-‘92). They hung in there for quite a bit and made some really solid records (of which this is my favorite). A nice little decade run.

Last year, this phenomenal album pulled off quite the trick.

It achieved what I like to call the “Impossible Trifecta”; where all three members of my family (me, my wife, and 16 yr old son) all agreed and liked the same record.

It was near the top of the list of my favorite albums of last year, and I’m still heavily ensconced in it. It’s incredible.

It has it all.
#randb , #pop , #soul , with a little bit of #jazz thrown in with some warm, vintage #motown .
It’s greatest attribute is that it sounds BOTH very modern AND classically nostalgic.

Olivia has such a remarkable, spacious voice, and everything going on around it is in its perfect place.

Twenty years from now, I think this will be considered a classic. I hope she sticks around for a long time and continues making albums that are even HALF as good as this one.

46 years ago today, April 5, 1980, T.G. Sheppard debuted at #68 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart with “Smooth Sailin’”. It went on to peak at #6 and spent a total of 16 weeks on the chart.

I got a bike radio for my birthday back then. Whenever I especially hear this song, it takes me back to those days of riding my bike and listening to my favorite radio station, AM 650 KYAK.

Bill Evans, Live at Art D’Lugoff’s Top Of the Gate, 2012 on Resonance

Another Sunday, another Bill Evan’s live LP from Resonance. This one was recorded October 23, 1968 in Greenwich Village. This time Eddie Gomez and Marty Morell join Evans.

This was recorded by Geoge Klabin himself, founder of the Rising Jazz Stars foundation and Resonance Records, as a 22 year old college student.

My copy—via a private sale—is the 2019 Record Store Day limited edition numbered release.
