I've blown three 800ma fuses on this #PSOne trying to add an RS-232 port using a MAX232... it's always the 8V supply to the 3.3v regulator. It might be time to go with a USB FTDI chip that brings its own power, but that means filling in the gaping hole I cut for the serial port, somehow... It also means no serial peripherals(!) Time for either trying my own 3.3V regulator on a separate rail or some 3D printing experiments tomorrow, I guess...

Today I tried to add a serial port to the #PSOne using these notes: https://web.archive.org/web/20250605190840/https://problemkaputt.de/psxspx-pinouts-sio-pinouts.htm

It didn't go so well. I realized I was using the wrong capacitors and the MAX232CPE was giving 0.65V on the TX line, so when I replaced them it just blew a fuse. I managed to find the fuse using the ol' multimeter (PS606) but it's one of the little PITA-to-find 0.8A fuses. It seems to work if I bridge it, though.

So I ordered some... all I could find were "slow-blow." Hopefully that's OK.

😩

PSXSPX Pinouts - SIO Pinouts

I was digging around in The Box and found a mini #PSOne with an interesting note... "No A/V input."

When I turned it on (with some effort), the screen was very dark and off-center. After some research, I found the video capacitors tend to go on these... I replaced the composite video capacitor with a through-hole and it works great! I also greased up the drive sled for good measure (I had to do this on my old PSOne, too!) 😌

I soldered the iffy power button closed for now... gotta replace that!

I’m half way through #finalfantasy VII Rebirth and it is amazing how this #PS5 remake of a #PSone game manages to feel like a #PS2 era action #JRPG and I mean this as a huge compliment!
