Terremoto de magnitud 6.0 sacude el oeste de Turquía

Un sismo de magnitud 6.0 y 10 kilómetros de profundidad estremeció el oeste de Turquía, provocando alarma en las ciudades cercanas a Sındırgı y Balıkesir, según reportó el Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos (USGS).

El movimiento telúrico se registró este martes 28 de octubre a las 19:48:29 UTC, equivalente a las 21:48:29 hora local de Turquía y a las 13:48:29 hora cental de este lunes 27 de la ciudad de México. De acuerdo con el reporte, el epicentro se ubicó en las coordenadas 39.192°N y 28.246°E, a 10 kilómetros de profundidad.

Las localidades más cercanas al epicentro fueron Sındırgı, situada a 8 kilómetros al noroeste; Bigadiç, a 24 kilómetros al sur-sureste; y Gördes, a 29 kilómetros al norte. La región de Balıkesir, al noroeste del país, también sintió con fuerza los efectos del movimiento sísmico.

Evaluación técnica del evento

El informe preliminar del USGS precisó un error de localización horizontal de 3.8 kilómetros y un margen vertical de 1.8 kilómetros, con 126 lecturas registradas en estaciones sísmicas internacionales. El error cuadrático medio fue de 0.58 segundos y el máximo gap azimutal alcanzó 21°.

El eventose registró con una profundidad considerada superficial, lo que incrementó la percepción del movimiento en superficie y la posibilidad de daños estructurales en construcciones vulnerables.

Hasta el momento, las autoridades locales y el Centro de Gestión de Desastres y Emergencias de Turquía (AFAD) no reportaron víctimas mortales ni daños materiales significativos, aunque continúan las labores de monitoreo y evaluación en las zonas más cercanas al epicentro.

Reacción de las autoridades turcas

El ministro del Interior de Turquía informó que los equipos de emergencia fueron desplegados en las provincias de Balıkesir y Manisa para inspeccionar infraestructuras y brindar asistencia a la población afectada. Las autoridades señalaron que no existió riesgo de tsunami en el mar Egeo.

El presidente Recep Tayyip Erdoğan instruyó al AFAD a coordinar las acciones con los gobiernos locales y reforzar las inspecciones en hospitales, carreteras y edificios públicos, mientras exhortó a la población a mantener la calma y seguir los canales oficiales de información.

Por su parte, la Agencia Europea de Sismología (EMSC) confirmó la magnitud del evento y destacó que el sismo fue percibido con intensidad moderada en ciudades como Esmirna, Estambul y Bursa, sin que se reportaran incidentes mayores.

Contexto sísmico en Turquía

Turquía se encuentra en una de las zonas sísmicas más activas del mundo debido a la interacción de las placas tectónicas de Anatolia, Eurasia y Arabia. Los movimientos en esta región han generado terremotos devastadores en el pasado, como el de febrero de 2023 en Kahramanmaraş, que dejó más de 50 mil muertos.

Expertos del Instituto Kandilli de Sismología recordaron que la zona occidental del país es propensa a sismos de moderada intensidad debido a la falla de Esmirna-Balıkesir, una estructura geológica que acumula energía sísmica de manera constante.

El último terremoto de magnitud similar registrado en esta región ocurrió en 2017, con epicentro en el mar Egeo, y causó daños estructurales en la isla de Kos y en el puerto de Bodrum. –sn–

To the owner managing @emsc, is there a way for you to not use country hashtags for earthquakes less than magnitude 4.5? Those quakes are common in countries near the Ring of Fire, and thus spamming country hashtags with magnitudes less than 4.5.

Reserve the use of the country-level hashtags to significant quakes, I would say, magnitude 4.5 and above.

I hope that's possible, whoever is handling this bot account.
