Sinking land drives coastal flood risk on densely populated Java Island

A new study published in Science Advances reveals that sinking land—not just rising oceans alone—will be the main cause of future coastal flooding along Indonesia's densely populated Java Island, putting millions at risk sooner than expected.

Dagestan Was Already Facing an Infrastructure Crisis. Then Came the Floods.

Dagestan is among the few regions in Russia with a name recognized globally, thanks largely to a quote-turned-meme by UFC champion Islam Makhachev: “Send him two, three years to Dagestan and forget.” The phrase has become a shorthand for the North Caucasus republic’s online image as a spartan training ground — a place defined by a grueling, hyper-masculine wrestling culture that turns boys into world-class fighters.

According to the #NationalWeatherService we are expected to slightly exceed the measurements taken during the #floods in 2017 -but- they are forecasting that water levels could subside after the expected peak hits today or tomorrow.

Sooo... we're probably not going to see #fishes and #ducks #floating by submerged window frames, just yet.

F-Day plus 55

It's fifty-five days since my house flooded. Since then, I've lived in hotels, with friends, on volunteering retreats and - mostly - in a series of one- or two-week AirBnB-style short-term lets. It's been wild. It's also been wildly disruptive. To our work. To our kids. To our general stability. Today, we make a change. Today we're moving into a medium-term let: sonewhere we can stay for the... say... six months or so it'll take to actually repair our house so we can move back in. We'll have our own space again in a way we haven't in a couple of months. I know the hard work isn't done. Our house is still a wreck! But it feels like, perhaps, we're beginning the second act of the three-act play "The Year Of The Flood". And that feels like progress. Right, I'd better go move house! (for like the seventh time this year...)
