Here's my #minecraft #paper #plugin to reduce the #anthropocentric
behavior of #videogame animals (cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, horses, etc).

Now:
* gather in herds
* flee from players, hostile mobs, wolves, etc
* herds tighten up at night
* players can no longer breed them;
* animals reproduce if plenty of space, fresh water, no danger, and access to grass

This stops players from treating animals as pure game mechanics w/ huge mob farms.

We're focusing too much on *how* we built software, not enough on *why*. It should be about people. It is about greed. When we're creating problems instead of solving them, it's time to take a step back

#ai #aipollution #software #software_engineering #anthropocentric

While We are happy to see folks rally up against " #AI " and celebrate the things that differentiate us from statistical art laundering machines, it's always a bit alienating to see the common shortpaw for that being " #human " / " #humanity ".

Not only is that further reinforcing #anthropocentric narratives that we should really do away with, but also there are many folks who may not feel represented by that #label .

There's folks into #transhumanism who choose to no longer have this label apply to them, there's #therian folk who are just like that.

And then there's so, so many folks who get their humanity denied their whole lives because they are black or otherwise have an unwante- We mean diverse #race or #ethnicity , because they are #transgender , #gay , #aromantic / #asexual ("wanting sex/ a romantic partner is part of the human experience") or otherwise deviate from the cisgender heterosexual (white) man, are #ActuallyAutistic or otherwise #nerodiverse , have a #MentalIllness , are #disabled , We could go on.

Where's the #intersectionality in this? Is there really no better unifying criteria here than the result vy which the #patriarchy justifies its #abuse ?

We just wish to contribute to projects that make stuff better for all of us without worrying if We're "human" enough.

When we say #climate #justice, we mean equal rights for all people on the globe in the context of #global #warming. We do not mean the globe itself. We do not mean #justice for dolphins, foxes, and butterflies. We do not mean our living #planet.
#Anthropocentric thinking is at the heart of our #environmental #problem. Unfortunately, it is the basis of our Western #culture.

Mastodon. You ready for a long #queerecology thread? I saw someone justifying #queerness as a "natural" thing because we see it in other #organisms. I often challenge the rhetoric of there being "queer", "trans", or "gay" animals. But that's because "queerness" needs challenging. It needs it bc it is inherently #anthropocentric, and also #eurocentric as a #system of identification, even if the #interactions themselves are sourced in every #human system on the planet from years before #whiteness.

It is fascinating how #life in the #soil has organized itself. The #mycorrhizal# networks are a good example. They connect #trees and all other #plants to form a #forest and transport substances and information to exactly where they are needed most.

If we set aside our #anthropocentric way of looking at things (you could just as well call it arrogance and conceit), we see this #intelligence in all living #organisms, from bacteria to humans, from anthills to the entire #planet.

This is funny because of -

..wait for it..

- what the OP said.

This self-centeredness presents as Ptolemaic, #anthropormorphic, #anthropocentric, etc. in our economies, societies, and
#science theories.

Imagine describing a theory as an adult, for other adults (as opposed to nursery rhymes) that went with "depending on whether we observe or not" rather than "depending on whether the paths have the same #symmetry or not".

This is equivalent to your friend carefully aligning their hands to create a shadow-dragon on the wall and inviting you into the room to see what they've created. You step in front of their hands, looking at the wall, and saying "I only see a big blob shadow."

Then a 3rd person (a #quantum mechanic) describes what took place as "the act of observation changed the outcome of the 2-hand superposition."

Well, I think I understand what you're implying there, and would definitely agree that information is not enough (fluffy?).

Lifestyles, habits, and world-views have to change too, and for those, more info is not what is generally needed. Pain & loss are unfortunate requirements, aka "learning the hard way" through experience instead of a lecture.

Given that we will do more to avoid pain, standing on the mainstream sidelines is what the comfy majority do. That area is constantly shrinking though, so that's one thing in favor of motivating serious change.

I think that short term mentality also is impeding the solutions we're talking about, which are by nature quite long term, generational aspects. We will have to modify religious world-views, #nationalist /economic, and scientific ones as well, all notoriously slow to change & adapt, even though inevitable in the long run.

These institutions suffer from the lack of #openaccess & #opensource properties in duplicitous manners. They are top-down, closed #hierarchy, #reductionist, as well as exclusionary & rivalrous.

Linear thinking & toy models rule the day because they are faster & easier to implement, and very often do no noticeable harm, or if they do, it's only to a small, powerless minority (or take lifetimes to accumulate into a problem).

This has an #evolutionary basis, so solutions will have to have special characteristics of 'over-ride' (power) while remaining constrained in both scope and time ( #decentralized & periodic). It will require the kind of #trust that #inequality and #plutocracy won't allow.

We'll need to be #interconnected, co-dependent, and often vulnerable. #Network forms must replace #Corporate organizational framing (note that even NGOs & NPOs take the post-agrarian revolution, city-state + Ptolemaic/ #anthropocentric hierarchy).

So a re-write of the narrative is in order. This is quite natural and repeats regularly throughout history. There are software updates & patches, and then there are entirely new apps & devices (driven by hardware advances, or tech in general).

Kuhn has clear ideas about how #science navigates these changes. Puzzle-solving ~/= bug patches. We are well beyond a saturation of patches; it's time for a paradigm shifting philosophy & protocol. My hack at this is called the #Information_Paradigm.

We are, in essence, needing something that can easily appear contradictive-- the early adopters of new paradigms are a very different crowd than the mass crowds that will follow them, based on emotional or fast-brain processes. Getting them onboard takes a different set of enticements than the post-pivot criticality will for the rest of civilization.

IOW, the 'fluffy' stuff comes back as partly but critically necessary, which is why we can't eliminate it completely. Leaders emerge across all scales, and need to be able to find common ground with their distant cohorts, rather than competitive isolation or aggression for individual benefit.

These leaders, and the groups/networks they represent, are very diverse. A default to "Open" principles means, among other things, looking for shared desires & interests to build #cooperation on, rather than immediately dividing along lines of difference.
