"A new #California bill would require state government forms that collect #demographic #data to add “#Jewish” as an #ethnic #identity.

This would both allow California #Jews to identify themselves as an #ethnicity for the first time and make California the first state required to collect data on Jews in this way.

Checking the box will be optional.

Currently, some state government forms ask a question about religion and include “Jewish” as a response. State Sen. #HenryStern (D-Sherman Oaks), a California Legislative Jewish Caucus member who introduced #SB1387, told J. that the state needs better demographic data on California Jews. He added that some Jews may identify as Jewish #ethnically instead of #religiously."

The effect of #diversity on scientific impact, as reflected in citations, can be studies by looking at the effect of #ethnicity, #discipline, #gender, affiliation, and academic age on citation numbers.

Of the classes considered, ethnic diversity had the strongest correlation with scientific impact.

Papers authored by ethnically diverse teams receive more citations than those by homogeneous teams. Ethnic diversity can enhance a paper’s impact by 10.63% and a scientist’s impact by 47.67%.

While ethnic diversity stands out, other forms of diversity such as discipline and affiliation also contribute to research impact but to a lesser extent.

This indicates that while #interdisciplinary work is beneficial, the diverse perspectives brought by ethnic diversity are paramount.

"One in five #university #students in #Britain would be reluctant to share a house with a #Jewish #student, according to research that warns #antisemitism has become “normalised” on #campuses.

A report by the Union of Jewish Students (#UJS) found that 20 per cent of students would be reluctant to live with a Jewish student, while 23 per cent have seen behaviour targeting Jewish students for their #religion or #ethnicity.

The findings come from polling of 1,000 students of all faiths and none, alongside dozens of testimonies gathered from the student body.

The report said Jewish students had described facing physical and verbal abuse, social ostracisation and widespread #antisemitic attitudes on campuses."
