Think of me – I like wild gardens – tote bag

This is a Scientist and Philosopher organic cotton bag that we have created using a Teemill base design. In the UK, in many cases, a garden is a very neatly arranged place and sometimes just a sterile lawn surrounded by 6 foot fences. Since gardens have replaced what were once wild places they need to be let go a bit and have at least an “untidy” corner. All sorts of wildlife will really appreciate it. Fences need to have holes cut in the bottom of them to let hedgehogs and other creatures through creating super hedgehog highways. You don’t need chemicals to get rid of your snails and slugs you need a hedgehog. We all need to start living more within the environment and not on top of it.

Check out how these products are made using organic cotton. We need to live in not just a sustainable way but one that causes the least environmental loading on the planet. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them. (S&P)

The design is also available as a T-shirt in men’s and women’s styles and for children. You can see this bag and our other designs in our Teemill shop, https://scientistandphilosopher.com/product/hedgehog-and-wild-garden-shopping-bag/.

Freedom of the seas – tote bag

This is the second Scientist and Philosopher bag in the Freedom of the seas – Protect our oceans series. It’s organic cotton so hopefully lighter environmental loading than many other materials.

The seas and oceans of the world are suffering in so many ways. There’s plastic pollution and acidification. They have absorbed the majority of the heat caused by burning fossil fuels and are filled with various forms of our industrial waste. Our ships make the world beneath the waves incredibly noisy. They also kill creatures such as whales directly. All the waters are over fished subsidised with fossil fuels and some of the catch fed to herbivore farm animals. We humans have and are continuing to completely mess up this part of our small planet.

Hedgehog – Do not disturb – I’m working in the garden – T-shirt

Scientist and Philosopher hedgehog design T-shirt with the message “Do not disturb – I’m working in the garden”.

If you are a keen gardener they can do wonders for you in terms of eating their way through slugs and snails and other creatures that might devour your hard work. With a hedgehog around you won’t need to use chemicals. So what do they need in return? Well first is a way into and out of your garden. They don’t climb so high fences are mountainous obstacles. So consider cutting holes at the bases of the fences you own and tell your neighbours why you are doing this. Secondly, they like wild places so a very neat garden although pleasing to the human eye is not really to the liking of hedgehogs. So sweep up leaves by all means but leave them piled up so hedgehogs can have some fun. It’s a two way street when it comes to hedgehogs, help them and they’ll help you. Remember though that if you create a wild space that you make sure not to use strimmers and other garden power tools as these can be deadly. So the message is support your local hedgehogs.

For those interested to dig into the topic, a review of the (rather technical) area of measuring #datacenters
#environmental impact (GHG emissions, water usage), alongside the key literature references is available here.

It highlights the challenges in terminology, measurement methodologies and disclosure practices, for the different business models (enterprise, colocation, cloud) which lead to contradicting and partial views.

#MontanaTribe Opposes ‘Slap on the Wrist’ Fine for #IllegalMining That Polluted #WaterSource

by Elyse Wild May 26, 2026

"The #FortBelknap Indian Community is opposing a settlement between the state’s Department of Environmental Quality and mining companies that illegally mined on the tribes’ ancestral homeland, harming crucial water sources for the reservation.

"From 2020 to 2022, #BlueArcLLC and #LegacyMiningLLC conducted mining activities at the #ZortmanMine in the #LittleRockyMountains without permits, licenses, or performance bonds, resulting in damage to ongoing environmental reclamation efforts.

"The #ZortmanLanduskyMine opened in 1979 and was operated by #PegasusGoldCorp. until it filed for bankruptcy in 1998. Two decades of mining activities caused widespread surface and #GroundwaterContamination, and in 1999, the DEQ and Bureau of Land Management took over the site. In 2001, Luke Ployhar, owner of Blue Arc LLC, bought the land out of the bankruptcy under the condition that the #DEQ had ongoing access to conduct #reclamation activities.

"The two agencies spent approximately $85 million cleaning up the area, according to the consent order. The site needs #WaterTreatment in perpetuity, meaning the additional cost to #taxpayers could exceed hundreds of millions of dollars.

"The illegal mining activities damaged the continuous #environmental cleanup and caused contaminated water to flow downstream to the #FortBelknapIndianCommunity, polluting its water.

In 2022, the state proposed a $516,567 penalty for Blue Arc LLC and Legacy Mining LLC. On Friday, May 22, the DEQ reached a settlement with the companies for $200,000, to be paid over five years. The agreement does not require an admission of wrongdoing."
