Cork Game Jam 2024

Cork Game Dev Group is happy to host an end of year holiday season game jam. Come make games, have fun and eat unhealthy snacks on Saturday, December 14th at Ballyphehane Community Centre. What is a game jam I hear you asking! It’s an event where a theme is announced and you try to make a game based on the theme in a silly amount of time - in this case one day. It’s a great way to try out an idea, or break out of a perfectionist mindset. Most of all it’s a great way to have fun and meet like minded people. The game jam is held with the support of Dublin GameCraft. Join the Cork Game Dev Group discord here. https://discord.gg/98tXj9hKTy. Schedule: Time Description 09:00 - 10:00 Set up 10:00 Theme Announcement 10:00 - 12:00 Work on games 12:00 - 12:30 Lunch 12:30 - 16:30 Work on games 16:30 Jam finished - Submit games 16:30 - 17:30 Play each others’ games 17:30 Game jam is over, clean up and leave for the pub FAQ: Can I make an analogue game for the jam? Yes! All game making is allowed and encouraged. I will have dice, paper, scissors, markers etc. available for analogue game creation. If I’m making a digital game do I need to bring my own computer? Yes, I am not able to provide computers, so you need to bring your own machine. Why is the event paid? The event is paid to ensure people only sign up if they plan to attend and to help offset some of the costs of room rental and catering. Cork Game Dev Group does not profit from running the game jam. Why is the event more expensive this year and why is there no pizza this year? The event ended up costing me around €100 to put on last year. The price is being raised a bit this year to make it more sustainable for me. The pizza is not so much price as about that the venue closes quite early, so the pizza party at the end, ended up being very early and took time away from the game making. This year anyone who wants dinner afterwards and to discuss the game jam can come along to The Beer Garden where I'll order a table (people will have to pay for their own food). Will there be voting or judging at the end? No. It can be fun to have a game jam be a competition, but it can also be stressful and make you worry more about winning than having fun and meeting people. So for this jam I’ve chosen not to have any voting or prizes. Can children take part in the game jam or attend if they are fully supervised? No, the event is meant for adults. Sorry to be a bad guy here, but I don't have the expertise or resources to run an event that includes children. Do I have to be in a group? No, you can do a solo project. You might want to consider joining a larger group for brainstorming though, as that can be a great way to explore the theme. I have never made a game, can I take part? Yes! Game jams are an excellent chance to try and make your first game. Where can I learn more? Join the Cork Game Dev Group discord channel https://discord.gg/98tXj9hKTy.

OMG this is great. The "Electronics" section of the freely-downloadable BBC sound effects collection is _amazing_, and if want new ringtones or alerts sounds for anything this is a gold mine:

Building a new product hasn't been easy. Here's a deep dive into everything I've learnt along the way to building GlowStitch, machine sewable LED strips. It's all the stuff I wish I'd known at the start of this journey. Enjoy! https://hackaday.io/project/186907-glowstitch-led-strips/log/225037-what-i-learnt-while-designing-glowstitch-leds

<p>This blog is a peek into the success, failures and learnings while developing GlowStitch, machine sewable LED strips. My iterative design process for this product have spanned several years and I’ve evolved my skills and the product with it over time. Wearable Tech is one of my passion areas, and is often an underdeveloped space due to needing a rare skills pairing of textiles and electronics. I’ve always been interested in making and teaching in this space, especially the idea that you can add some magic to something you can wear. Get a chance to be creative and learn some great technical skills too. However, the current tools in this space are limited. The Lilypad range has been a staple in this space for years, offering a huge variety of tools and
