To fellow #gamedev people: there are lots of events for making contacts and showing your game that are not in the US:

MIGS / Gamescom / Taipei Game Show / TGS / Develop / etc.

You do *not* need to attend GDC or DICE to survive or "make it". In fact, the worldwide trend (at least to me) indicates greater global diversity of talent and opportunity.
