The Tiring Ride to Rising Tide. :-)

Day Two - Tarago to Sassafras. (The purple leg in the map below).

A beautiful cycling day. Pleasantly cool with light drizzle. Rather large hills though, and I suspect I have triggered some tendonitis in the knees.

Overnight was a lovely, remote campsite 4km off the main road. With no car noise and no mobile reception. Bliss!

Today is #EqualPayDay in Europe.

From today until the end of the year, women in the EU are effectively working for free. ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿšซ

In the EU27, the average gross hourly earnings of male employees are 12% higher ๐Ÿ“ˆ than for women.

Thatโ€™s 1.5 months of unpaid labour each year. โ€ผ๏ธ A direct result of the persisting gender pay gap that Europe still hasnโ€™t closed.

Closing the gender pay gap is a political choice. Equal work = equal pay. โœŠ

@samir

Sorry, I am not pointing the finger at anybody. And you are right, in many specific cases there are many reasons for not paying.

However, by looking at the big picture, observing so many volunteer-based projects (e.g. mastodon servers) run by generous people who struggle to meet ends, i think that we have a general societal problem.

And I think this amounts to the general attitude, that has been built in people's mind in the last 20 years, that software applications and internet services are basically for free. And this is why we are in such a dire situation of monopoly on basic internet services.

It's just my point of view, of course, feel free to challenge it.

Codeberg has over 200k accounts and only 1.2k members, which, if we assume that the recommended membership fee is the average, works out to ~50kโ‚ฌ per year in membership dues.

Theyโ€™re begging for old hardware to run CI jobs, because they canโ€™t just go out and buy a Mac Mini.

Please, folks, if you think a non-USA alternative to GitHub is important, and you have the disposable income: put your money forward.

@ascentale @gbargoud @bikenite #BikeNite A6. I prefer low maintenance parts that are easy to fix.

What makes you think a belt drive or hydraulic brakes are not easily repairable at home? They require no more skill than repairing chains or cable-actuated brakes, just different tools.

@ascentale @gbargoud @bikenite

#BikeNite A6. ABSOLUTELY prefer easy to fix, standard parts. For everything and anything. Better if you can buy them at ANY bike shop if you have a problem, and which do not require special order. This is the case for anything I own (bicycling or not). Too much proprietary stuff = BAD (IMHO).

A true workhorse, I tell you. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ”ฅ

Crowvember offering 12: "The crow, being a tool user, knows how to fix his cassette."

@ratfactor

And yet so few of the entire human race - using cassettes for several decades - ever understood what caused those cassettes to unwind and tangle their players in the first place ๐Ÿ™‚

@Sheep_Overboard We need a few good mysteries to keep our brains entertained. ๐Ÿ˜†
@ratfactor this is absolutely the album a crow would listen to, well done

@ratfactor

we all knew how to do that, eh?

@BillMcGuire @ratfactor
Not with a pencil, but a BIC pen ;)
The cassette tape pencil mystery finally solved!โœ๏ธ

@bornach @residuum @BillMcGuire

Oh, that's great! I figure the old pencil my parents had which DID fit nicely was probably circa the early 1960s, when they would have been in college, though it could even have been a holdover from earlier. I'd love to know what it was. This was long before I read "The Pencil" by Henry Petroski, in which I learned the fascinating history and variety of the "simple" woodcase graphite pencil!

@residuum @BillMcGuire Oh yeah, Bic "Cristal" pens did fit better! I discovered that one day. (Though my parents had a vintage hexagonal woodcase pencil that was larger and worked perfectly also! I used to love going through their box of college-era stationary supplies.)
@ratfactor "Murder"... I see what you did there. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

@ratfactor

I'm astonished to find that Nick Cave's music is still being sold on cassette. But it is!

@Walrus Cassettes are back, baby!

@Walrus @ratfactor

Came here for a Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds reference, and the Fediverse delivered ๐Ÿฅฐ

@Jorsh @Walrus For the clever and wise, the Fediverse provides! โœŠ โค๏ธ
@ratfactor That's what I was doing wrong! I didn't have a crow to help me wind. ๐Ÿคฆ๐Ÿป
@EclecticGnome Wherever there is an unspooled cassette, look around, for there is a crow on a nearby branch or rooftop waiting to lend a beak! (They just want the music to keep playing.)
@ratfactor I never had to do this because I always keep my tape recorder clean.
@ratfactor @markwyner
Love the cassette title. I mightโ€™ve gone with โ€œShake Your Money Makerโ€ by the Black Crowes if it fit.
@DanMorgan @markwyner I'm going to assume this bird has a whole library of favorite corvid tunes to crow about. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ
