Trying very hard to avoid computers, and failing miserably.

A 30-something British-born coconut Indian living in Zürich, Switzerland. I speak English, and enough Hochdeutsch to order a pizza.

Occasional, inadvertent arsehole. If observed, please call me out.

Fascists, racists, Zionists, TERFs, homophobes, and other bigots can fuck right off.

PM me for my Signal or Threema handle.

we would be very different people today if the free software movement had not made it very clear, from the beginning, that penniless children are not only welcome in it, but core to the ethos

it was a huge part of our life growing up

it makes us absolutely furious that anyone wants to pull the ladder up after them. how dare

Which one of you fuckers is trying to break into my DeviantArt account?

(I was not aware I had a DeviantArt account. Username [redacted] checks out though, it’s definitely mine.)

All day today, I’ve been thinking about the things I actually care about. And it’s in this order:

  • Taking care of my family
  • Ensuring my autistic daughter is okay should I ever pass away
  • Loving my wife
  • Appreciating art
  • Creating art
  • Looking at the stars
  • Playing a game
  • Drinking coffee and tea
  • Pushing my physical limits
  • Listening to silence
  • 35 hours! It’s been a while since I did this much.

Honestly, probably a mistake. I was feeling rough last night and slept very badly. Perhaps a bite would have helped.

I’m feeling better now I’ve had some coffee and breakfast, though.

    - Friend gives me a list of instructions for [thing] in Discord conversation
    - I'm thinking: Okay I should copy this to a text file
    - Then think: Wait, why bother? It's a discord convo I can grab it later
    - Hour passes
    - Discord goes offline and won't load older messages
    - Uhh ok, I go back to the computer I had the conversation and scroll up
    - Discord force reloads while scrolling, then breaks
    - WHY DOES ALL THE SOFTWARE BY COMPANIES THAT FIRED ALL MY FRIENDS ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO KEEP BREAKING

I have peaked. I will never top this.

Definitely sometimes businesses are making brutal decisions to squeeze out extra profit, but also businesses in contracting markets are making the same brutal decisions just to survive, and I wish people would at least occasionally acknowledge that you can't tell the difference just by seeing surface-level "layoffs occurred" news

2/3rds of the way through a fast day (not including the sleeping part).

    I can do this.

Question: Do you know what issue is most important to you? I emphasize the word "most" -- like, if you got a wish to fix one single problem, would you know your answer immediately, or would you have to think about it?

(Doesn't matter if it's big, like climate change, or small, like too many cigarette butts on the ground or whatever.)

If you are clear on your most important issue, feel free to add it as a reply.

    Boosts encouraged for more answers.

    Yes. I know it.

If you’re implementing a timezone selector after handling all continents, oceans, and pseudo-macro regions… don’t forget Büsingen am Hochrhein 😄 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%BCsingen_am_Hochrhein

A tiny German town of fewer than 1,500 people, completely surrounded by Switzerland.

    Fun historical timezone trivia:
Büsingen is associated with Europe/Zurich instead of Europe/Berlin.

Why? In 1980, West Germany introduced DST, but Switzerland initially did not. For a few months:

    Germany was UTC+2
    Switzerland stayed UTC+1
and Büsingen followed Swiss time to avoid daily chaos with the surrounding area.

That historical difference is still reflected in the tz database today.
