She/Her. Vancouver B.C.

Lover of pretty things, hobby collector, outside wanderer, neurodiverse family, gamer, maker, currently back in school reinventing myself. again.

Finished Classroom and Community Support diploma. Transferred to UFV's Bachelor of Adult Education.

Profile pic is me, a white person with short brown hair wearing glasses, looking at the camera with a love bird sleeping on my shoulder.

Banner is a photo I took of goslings running away in the sunshine.

Maybe some of you lovely people can help an indecisive #adhd mind out.

I've been trying to cancel my #audible and use my #libby library app more when listening to audio books. But I have a number of credits that will disappear when I cancel. I couldn't decide what books to get, then forgot all about it, now I have more credits. Face palm.

What was the best #book you #read or #listened to this year? Or ever?

I like a wide variety of genres. Maybe nothing too heavy currently. #audiobook

1/n Yesterday on @chris I commented (https://mstdn.chrisalemany.ca/@chris/115612771113881465) about the #PostSecondary review announced by the #BCNDP.

Today, on #socialBC I want to do a summary thread on this 145 page β€œState of Post Secondary in Canada 2025”.

I am grossed out by its AI fanboying -- a statement on the "state" of education in itself -- but the data is good... so... onward.

@sundogplanets I don't know if this is helpful, but I use this with my students to try to get enough information to write a good letter. Feel free to adapt the list as appropriate for your discipline! Writing rec letters is awful, but I find it slightly less so if you're getting good input. https://www.carrieshanafelt.com/asking-for-a-letter-of-recommendation
Asking for a Letter of Recommendation β€” Carrie Shanafelt

As a very disabled person, I can't work a "regular" job. And due to the actions of one of my abusers, I can't currently get SSDI either. Also, I'm engaged, so I'd lose my benefits upon marriage anyway. So my main source of income is my knitting. I am an artisan and I sell my knits at prices that barely reflect the value of the labor. As an anti-capitalist, I strongly resent having to mimic capitalist structures to survive, but it's my only option currently.

And I'm running a 10% off holiday sale in my shop tab. Use this link to apply the discount code: https://ko-fi.com/crippledcommie/link/HAPPYHOLIDAYS10

Edit: Only able to ship to the US right now, sorry! Ko-fi and the USPS in combination make the relevant information and application of that information really REALLY difficult to parse.

Has anyone experienced #barriers to education that they would be willing to talk about?

I'm doing some coursework around barriers to adult education specifically but would welcome any stories people have the energy to share with me.

Barriers being anything that made furthering your education challenging or impossible. Big or small.

I'm also wondering if anyone has used #art in a #socialjustice context. For their own healing, to speak out, or raise awareness?

Disabled person asks nondisabled people to include all disabled people in all aspects of public life, specifically the voting process.

The responses included people from other countries telling me they don't have that problem and people from this country telling me how to continue to be excluded.

As I said to one of them: Did I ask for advice or accessibility?

This is the usual American response to disability, btw. They trust the things printed are accurate, they trust that disability is even understood or cared about. And the rest of them just tell us to stay home.

The entire country should be accessible to everyone at all times. How's that for a concept. And people saying I and mine should accept that and just stay home are wrong and also really shitty people.

Once upon a time I called a restaurant and asked if they were wheelchair accessible. I specifically asked about stairs. They said yes they were wheelchair accessible, there were no stairs at all. We arrived, excited to try their food, to find there were steps to get into the restaurant. I asked why they said it was accessible when I couldn't even get in the door. They said the restaurant is accessible once you get inside.

I think about this a lot. It's accessible once you get inside, but they don't offer you any way to get in there.

This is common. That restaurant wasn't the first place to be inaccessible while saying it is accessible, it's just the one that stuck with me most because the host was so sure they were accessible and could accommodate me. They were even happy about being able to have me there.

So how does this go so wrong? Can you tell me, because I don't know. How did they get so close and still fail?

Here's a funny one for you: There is a restaurant on Staten Island that has a really great ramp. It's obviously up to spec. The only problem is to use the door at the top of the ramp you have to go up the stairs, inside the restaurant, and ask someone to open the door at the top of the ramp. So close, right? Disabled people would never be out without a nondisabled person, so this is a smart decision. (This is not a smart decision. Disabled people do in fact go out alone or with other disabled people.)

Nondisabled people do not understand disability or disabled people. Not at all. They think they do, but they view everything through their own biases and fail to truly know us as separate human beings. That's a problem, not that they realize it.

Today I heard the 2nd of this year's Canadian Massey lectures, on the threats to human rights.

On the same day that Alberta suspended Canada's Charter of Human Rights in order to attack transgender people. They know that their vicious attack contravenes the Charter, which is why they suspended it even before the Supreme Courts hears a case.

We are all in danger here. We have to stop our governments from making this the norm.

The UK is considering withdrawing from the European Convention on human rights. Soon, none of us will be safe.

It's all in the name of taking rights away from others, but we are all "others" to someone if we do not unite in solidarity and stop this.

Ok. That was indeed hard. It took awhile to wrap my brains around the mechanics, but I got there. Great game @isaaclyman I will be adding it to my rotation!

@rodbotic A new game to try!
