@MichaelimOdenwald There is an entire ecosystem on my Win10 machines. The ecosystem has a problem with migrating.

I totally reject where M$ is going. Just like with Adobe they control access to your creations with their subscription models and worse with sneaking in exploitation clauses to your intellectual property.

I almost bought a second laptop with mint to finally wean me off. Almost.
The last time I attempted this the thing collected dust...

I have libreoffice and the user interface absolutely tops the current MS office I had to use at a friends place recently. But unlike in old days I haven't done any serial lettering or other more challenging tasks like editorial work for a magazine with texts from 20 different sources with 20 different formats with pressing deadlines.

I dabbled in Illustrator 8.

Inkscape frustrates me.
Nor did I become friendly with Gimp.

I would never. I have a 20 year old Adobe Photoshop and do not feel the need to upgrade,because I no longer have to deal with other companies and fight with file compatibility. Gimp still doesn't have the convenience I have with that 20 year old Photoshop.

I bought a win 10 laptop as recent as possible with sufficient speed just now. It'll last me likely a decade or more. And the more people move on, the safer will my win10 be. Because nobody bothers to hack a minority of old tech.

Has anyone seen an article on how to prevent Microsoft from accessing OUR Windows 10 machines? I'm especially interested in letting it have full access to our ethernet system, but no access to the internet. The searches I tried were all defeated, by results on how to do the opposite...

One way I could imagine is via the router and the computers MAC-address (which identifies hardware): telling it to firewall it from the internet, but allow access to the LAN (local home network).

Yes, I expect there is such a mechanism. What is needed is a tool with an understandable interface, that can just set that up. I'm happy with editing the registry, but surely someone has written something to do it......

Type ipconfig

This will get you the network information of the computer

Then log in to the Router's admin interface using your browser. You will get a graphical user interface there. What this will look like will depend greatly on your router.

@Walrus @Endof10 setup your Networkcard manualy! Then set up a free ip in your home network for your machine and delete the DNS Server or let it free in the configuration. That's it. Windows 10 can't connect to the internet but in your home network.👋😉

@Endof10 my cpu may be old but I'm running llm's locally on my 3060 12 GB and getting work done all day. For Microsoft this pc is trash... Just a question... Why?!??
I would consider trash those 4 gig machines that "run" W11 with really weak hardware.
I already have Debian installed and plan to cut off W10 from the network to keep it safe for the very little work I cannot do on Linux.

@Endof10 It really annoys me when tech firms drop support for existing products no doubt hoping we'll all upgrade our perfectly serviceable desktops and laptops. Their attitude to waste in a World with limited resources is frightening. No wonder capitalism is struggling to deal with Climate Change.

@Nic3 @Endof10 You can find that information in the Settings app > System > About, and on the "Edition" line under the "Windows specifications" section it should say the Windows version followed by the edition you're running (i.e. "Windows 11 Home", "Windows 10 Pro", etc.).

@Endof10 Already planning to move to Linux and at the moment, leaning towards Mint. My Laptop and my desktop both are capable of running 11 but I tried it and hated it so I'm not upgrading.

I have a couple of possible options, opinions anyone? 1) Switch to Linux mint and take my chances for gaming with windows emulation, or, 2) dual boot win 10 and Linux mint, or, 3) install Linux mint and run win 10 in a virtual machine, or, 4) install Linux mint and buy a steam deck, hoping that all of my retro gaming can be accommodated.

FWIW, the main trouble spots for Linux gaming are titles with certain anti-cheat solutions (take a look at https://areweanticheatyet.com/ for more information). You'll also run into issues with certain productivity suites not running easily/well, e.g. MS Office, Adobe, etc., but there is alternative software depending on your needs. Besides that, most games run surprisingly well, and the experience as a whole is pleasant if it works for you.

If it is about Retrogaming, there is Batocera, a specialized Linux-Distro for exactly that. More current games are more likely an issue. But It's mostly about Anticheat. Other options are modding Anything Ubuntu or Nobara. Or, if you are techy enough, Arch Linux. Steam works on And Desktop Linux quite fine. And the Steamdeck effectively runs an Arch Linux. So, its a Matter of comfort with initial configuration. At the end it will work either way.

A Windows VM is only an Option, if you really need (means no proper replacement Option, whichbos really rare in the meantime) a Software, which doesn't run with wine, no matter how hard you try.

If you have one or two of the problematic Games, I would keep a dual boot Windows-Linux.

I'm unconvinced that the end of formal Win10 support will turn remaining systems into security risks.

On the one hand, any as-yet-unpatched vulnerabilites WILL remain.

On the other hand, none of Microsoft's new Win11 fuckery will be backported to Win10, mitigating the additio0n of new vulnerabilities. Win10 has been under scrutiny for years, while Win11 is still pretty much a V1.0 product, as shown by Redmond's ongoing blunders..

On the gripping hand, operating a Win10 system behind a firewall, using an up-to-date browser, adblocker, and antivirus package, and avoiding dodgy Web sites and unverified downloads - all the normal security practices of a sensible computer user - should reduce the residual risk to threat levels comparable to a Win11 system, if not better.

@macronencer There is also the possibility of skipping or loosening the compatibility checks, and then upgrading to 11 on machines that do not fit the official requirements of Microsoft.

Edit: For others: As someone who loves using Linux, I'd recommend giving Linux a try if you can, but of course there's also many for whom that is not an option.

@Endof10 Mybusiness used to run 6 computers - I got so fed up with having to buy new ones every time Windows had another upgrade. A computer magazine had a free CD with Debian Linux. I installed it on our oldest machine - a 486. Worked perfectly. Installed it on a Pentium machine - at no cost for a second install. That was the end of Microsoft for me!
