Free Software Foundation Europe is a charity that empowers users to control technology. Software is deeply involved in all aspects of our lives. #FreeSoftware (aka #OpenSource) gives everybody the rights to use, understand, adapt, and share software. These rights help support other fundamental rights like freedom of speech, freedom of press, and privacy. #SoftwareFreedom

The @EUCommission released the new Technological Sovereignty Package.

This could mark a milestone for #FreeSoftware in Europe: it explicitly recognises our “Public Money? Public Code!” principle and introduces a Free Software first principle for public cloud and AI procurement.

But strategy alone is not enough! We need binding rules, long-term funding, and meaningful civil society involvement.

Restack: a new European consortium for a digital Europe - FSFE

Recent geopolitical events have highlighted Europe's need for a resilient, homegrown technology ecosystem free from critical dependencies. The new Horizon ...

FSFE - Free Software Foundation Europe

🎉 Good news! We and our consortium partners have secured funding for the next programme to promote #FreeSoftware in the EU: Restack. This follows the cut in funding for the ‘Next Generation Internet’ programme in 2024.

💡Restack’s mission is to reimagine and reshape the internet to create a value-driven, human and inclusive society for all.

1/2

📌 Make enforcement genuinely inclusive.

Europe's digital ecosystem runs on Free Software, SMEs, and small developer teams. They face complex procedures and disproportionate barriers. Compliance workshops shaped by gatekeeper agendas are not enough.

Enforcement must be designed with smaller actors in mind, and Device Neutrality must be at its core.

Users must have real control over the software on their own devices. 🔓

🧵 4/4

📌 Ban gatekeeper account requirements.

Gatekeepers use mandatory accounts, paid or free, to sidestep their obligations. Developers seeking interoperability access or alternative app store distribution can be forced to hold gatekeeper-controlled accounts, which can be revoked without recourse.

This back door must be explicitly closed.

🧵 3/4

📌 Expand the DMA's scope.

Some companies engage in clear predatory behaviour, locking users into ecosystems, limiting interoperability, restricting software freedom, yet fall outside current thresholds.

The DMA review should have covered more companies and new types of core platform services, including device manufacturers that block users from installing alternative operating systems.

👋 Today, our colleagues @llas and Jithendra Palepu are taking part in the SCiDA (Shaping Competition in the Digital Age) conference in Düsseldorf.

We call our representatives to support #FreeSoftware in public administrations because:
🔸We need software that fosters the sharing of good ideas & solutions
🔹We need software that guarantees freedom of choice, access, & competition
🔸We need software that helps public administrations regain full control of their critical digital infrastructure

#Free Software allows public administrations to become digitally sovereign!
